Default ulladulla charger's roof needs a lick of paint - help needed

OK. so ive been thinking about giving my roof a lick of paint. i know painting has been covered many times before but the difference now is i dont want a showroom finish, just for it to be a bit better than it is - not hard to achieve

heres a pic of it currently. its quite faded and that other line is where i removed my speed stripe made from masking tape.

anyway just wondering how people would go about painting it. i want it to be white.

    i was thinking:
    1. sand it back a bit - not that there is much to sand back
    2. use a wet/dry sand paper and make it smooth
    3. primer/undercoat??? not sure what to do here?
    4. buy cheap spray paint from mitre 10 and give it a coat, sand back with wet dry, then another coat?

how will this turn out? anything im missing. i just wanna do a quick weekend job on this and keep the cost as low as possible. im later planing on painting the bonnet and boot white aswell and the pillars so the top half of the car is white.

any tips or things ive missed would be greately appreciated.

    thanks

Wet sand with 800 wet and dry paper. You dont want it too shiny, or the paint wont stick. A nice even not too thick white primer coat (white, because you are using white main coat). A dust coat of white, followed by a double header coat , when the dust coat has gone tacky. Being a solid colour, you will not need to put a clear coat on top.
Do not waste your time or money on any paint other than automotive paint.

Your best bet for a cheap job, is Super Cheap Auto.

    Shopping list:

1 Litre of Sugar Soap, (used in your sanding water, and used to wash the surface off B4 you paint)
5-6 sheets of 800wet and dry,
    1 rubber sanding block,
1 litre of primer, (grey will do),
1 litre of high opacity white, and
4 litres of Acrylic thinners. (the general purpose stuff, is only good for cleaning your spray gun)

    cheers Chuck.

hmm.....ya see i dont have a spray gun so its gonna be a crappy spray can job.

should i still purchase the same paints but in spray can form instead of in 1 where i can use a compressor and gun???

isnt it possible to just get a primer spray can, paint, sand, then topcoat white glossy paint? that seems alot easier? grrrrrr this job just got alot harder. how would my idea turn out???

    thanks

    Spray can will work fine.

Get the "Power-Plus" brand touch-up paint that Super-Cheap and other places sell.
Its expensive, the 350g cans are ~$20 from memory, but its very good paint and easy to apply.

    Shopping list:

    Sugar soap,
    800 wet and dry paper,
? (lotssa) cans of primer, and
    ? (notasomuchalotssa)cans of white.

Still gunna be a bad paint job, as the cans each contain less than 30% paint, the rest is thinners and propellant. The paint in cans is usually 3rd rate rubbish anyway.

    cheers Chuck.

Does it really need to be done?

For the amount you'll spend on it, and then the roof will be a different colour to the rest of the car due to the rest being faded, and the cans won't be a perfect match anyway.

Have you tried giving it a cut and buff first?

The only reason I question if it needs to be done is just that if you don't have the resources to do it all, and do it properly then.. you might end up with more of a mess than what you started with.

As much as I hate to put a downer on it, I would have to agree.

well currently this is where the car stands

except i made the speed stripes from masking tape and they are all winkled and coming off and split in spots etc....

the car is more for shits n giggles. it was given to me for free and i just drive it around. im giving it to a mate when i go to canada in 6 weeks time and then i will get it back from him when i return. i dont ever really plan on selling it and if i do i dont expect to get much for it. i dont care how it looks as you can see (all the orange etc...) aslong as it gets me where i wanna go. i think it will be funny to have a different coloured roof!

also in the long term.....maybe later in january i will try and find a replacement bonnet and boot (white) and then i can paint the pillars and i will have this big crazy white line down the middle of the car.

anyhooo ive pretty much sanded the paint back on the roof and its all smooth and ready for a primer when i go and get some LOL

thanks for all the help and concerns but i dont really mind how it turns out aslong as its white and the paint doesnt come off in 2 weeks time

i painted my ae82 seca when i had it, whole thing, in spray packs from kbauto1, was originally light blue/green, sanded it back, did some dent repairs, stripped all the parts on it took out windows etc and then got over it and ran out of paint and cbf doing it anymore so i painted the bonent and boot black. It looks better now, the front bar is back on and its a bit cleaner, i sold it to a guy who live a few houses down from me

What imo you should do, is pick a silvergrey type color, paint your roof, bonnet and top part of the boot in that color, mask of the car at the waistline and also paint it the silver, so you would do the pillars and about 5cm of the top of the door and the front gaurds and the rear quarters, would make a nice finish i think, then you could get some clear in an aresol and go over the whole car.

why not hire a compressor and gun for the weekend?
if your doing a quick job shouldnt take more than a weekend to do all the spraying if you get on with it

Paint in a can works fine for home jobs, if you aren't too bothered about the way it looks:

That was done with supercheap bought paint. Sticker applied later.

Cleaned it well, masked up the bonnet, sprayed down enough coats to make it black

Just gotta take it easy on the amount of paint you spray on at once - don't rush...
