Leave it stock then.

i know, but they cant seem to get there head around the fact that even though its a 6 cylinder, its only .4L more displacement than the standard 1Y.
imo, i would probably use the same or even less fuel with the 1ggte over the 1.6l 1y thats in it now.
there major concerns are
it has too much power
and it will use two much fuel.
i agree about the 22r though, but its about the only option ive got.
both are bullshit but they wont listen to reason.
Leave it stock then.

So do a 1G-GE conversion then.
- it's not turbo
- it's cheaper than a built 22R or a 1G-GTE conversion
- it will use way less fuel than either of the above
- it doesn't have "too much power"
- it's easy to convert to 1G-GTE later when mummy says you're allowed

the 1Y was under-torqued for a utility vehicle anyways. 22R as mentioned is a turd, whether polished or not. If you want a more suited motor to the hilux way of life, may i actually discourage the 1GGE and 1GGTE, and recommend the 1GGZE. Same platform so you can do the intermediate 1GGE, but it is supercharged, so that gives you much better towing torque. IMO if you have a ute, you better well load it up, otherwise you might as well get a sedan... so in that respect torque is your friend.
The 1GGZE is a much more drivable motor than any previously mentioned in this thread, and costs similar or less than a 1GGTE for the conversion, dependant on how much boost you want.
Oh, and Brett_Celicacoupe put a 1GGTE into his RA40 with W58, aftermarket IC, guages, IC piping and cert for under $2500, so depends how willing you are to learn putting a motor in as to how much it will cost. His 1GGTE bog stock apart from the aforementioned options and a home made boost controller has netted him a 13.5 second 1/4 mile, so they have plenty of go in stock trim, and it will be a while before you will be able to handle more than it will have. That said, it should be tame enough (especially the 1GGZE) that you can learn to handle the power in it.

ok, heres the story.
im not inexperienced with power. i drive my parents VZ SS quite a bit that has all your bolt on mods and makes some nice power. yes, quite hypocritical of them isnt it.
now, they have said that i can do wateva i like when im 18, so 5 months time.
whats the difference internally between the 1GGZE and 1GGTE? cam profiles and compression ratios the same?
whats the most power i could acheive reliably if i kept it supercharged?
my ute does haul stuff, but usually its not more than a couple of Fast 50 dirtbikes (~500kg)
am i really going to notice the amount of torque, or lack thereof, the 1ggte provides? it would be more than the standard 1Y wouldnt it? and i cant say ive ever thought to my self while driving, yeh i could use some more torque.
$2500 is what a front cut cost so its going to be at least that amount. i will be doing all the work my self but i still think it will cost easily $3500-4000.
screw all the suggestions above of the 1G engines....
.... everyone here is forgetting the "forged from unobtainium" 3RZ-FE found in late 90's onwards hiluxs. These engines are INSANELY strong, modern, efficient, plenty of power + torque from stock, and getting pretty cheap now.
Add turbo for joy in the pants.
...... butt scratcher?!
Just a word of caution, to anyone considering fitting a MKIV W58 to anything. The Supra box has the most insanely rearward shifter mount I have ever encountered. If you are happy having the shifter under the hand brake in a Celica, go for it !!!
Rear extension housings are not an easy swap, unless you happen to stumble across the correct box. ie. It wont work trying to put a W57 extension onto the W58. !!. The shaft sizes, and support/bearing bosses in the extension housings can be different sizes. If you find a W58/W57 with a better shifter position, use that instead.
cheers Chuck.

You just earnt yourself some rep for that. That's what I'm going to do.Originally Posted by The Witzl
My local gearbox shop swapped the extension housing from my w55 to my w58 for about $50. For that price im sure it was a piece of piss to do.

The extension housing is easy.
The rear housing however, may not be.
There are some differences between the alloy plates and the steel plates rear housings.
The extension/shifter housings though should be easily interchangeable.

I used an alloy-plate rear housing with a JZA80 W58. There are some differences and you have to mix'n'match components, but if you have both complete boxes it's quite an easy thing to do. The only modification required was drilling and tapping a hole in the JZA80 shifter rod to accept the shifter bush from the early box.

My concern was with the 2 shafts on the RH side of the housing. There was a slight difference in diameter. That was when trying to use a 22R extension housing on a JZA80 W58.
Tapering the shaft may have worked, but I did not pursue it any further.
cheers Chuck.
