I'm doing this swap right now.
1JZ 1984 Celica GTS
I think it's a good choice. I think 1G lacks the power of a 1JZ and has little aftermarket support. I didn't do any firewall modifications and it fits ok, the radiator is forward a few inches. The benefit of the RA over the MA chassis is that it's much lighter. The 1UZ would probably be a good chioce, but is a heavier motor and is more difficult to reach the horsepower a 1JZ can make easily. I would think the beams 3S-GE would be nice but also more work and $ to make 500+ HP as easily as the 1JZ can.
Those pictures are a few weeks old, I'll post updated ones tomorrow. all thats left is radiator/intercooler mounting and plumbing, then wiring. Should be running soon.
While we can all say that putting a 1jz in a RA6x is possible...I think that there is a lot that points to it not being the best idea.
Toyota decided to make changed to the xA6x chassis when they put in a 6 cylinder engine (MA61), do you think they were silly?
I'd start with the MA61, but anyway
Cheers

1. Celica is only lighter because of the engine and drivetrain differences. Once you've put a big heavy 1JZ in a Celica and upgraded the drivetrain to match it will be pretty much as heavy as the equivalent MA61. Sure the MA61 has a few extra inches of sheetmetal but I can't see that being worth more than 50kg, which is fuck-all IMO.Originally Posted by SupraFreak
2. What makes you think the all-alloy 1UZ is heavier than the cast-iron 1JZ?
3. Why did you reply to a thread which died over a year ago?

Back from the dead... again. Good way to get banned as a new member probably.
Recently completed. Not hard to fit the engine and R154, the tough part is sandwiching in all the neccessary cooling. It came out clean and simple though.
And as far as weight balance being destroyed, this is definately a much heavier setup than a 22r with a w58, but the weight of the R154 is set back a good distance. Feels nice with the Megan coilovers in it. The battery for this car has been relocated to the rear spare well. I wish i had scaled it pre-swap.
