water pump, oil pump, etc.
So my engine is rattling when at pretty much any revs above 1500rpm. At first I thought it was a drivetrain noise but realised today it does it if I rev it a bit in nuetral.
Does always do it but does it most of the time and seems to getting progressively worse. I think it started a week or so ago.
Any idea of what I should checking? (Dont say water pump)

loose nut/bolt?
Something rubbing against the body?

Ok I'll check all the pulleys bolts are tight tonight (guess I just jamb somthing in somewhere to stop them turning when I turn the bolts??)
Wouldnt be something rubbing up against the body. Doesnt really sound like that kind of noise, and would probably be making the noise all the time if that was the case.
If its not a pulley bolt........whats the next step? Do I just start replacing things and hope for the best??![]()

have a good look/listen to try and get a general feel from where the noise is coming from.
Is it from the long motor?
From the bottom-end or head? Is it valvetrain noise?
How does the engine oil look?

Engine oil is only about 2,500km old. I expect it should be fine but I'll check that too.![]()

Get an oil pressure gauge on it if you can, that will tell you if it's bottom-end related (eg big end bearing).

Ahh nuts, and I thought the water pump possibility was bad!Originally Posted by Norbie

screwdriver stethoscope FTW!
you'll work out where it's coming from in no time.
Also try with the clutch pedal de-pressed and see if it still makes the noise.

The fanbelt Idler arm pulley makes a funny rattle when the bearing is on the way out..
(that's what mine was)
Does it with/without clutch depressed. Definately an engine thing, not drivetrain.
This sounds interesting! I dont have a stethoscope but Im sure I can rig up some form of ghetto method. Give us the jist of how you did it?Originally Posted by Draven

you will need:
1 big bastard flat-head screwdriver.
put the business end of the screwdriver against various parts of your engine in the general area of the noise, and put your ear to the blunt end.
This area helped me realise that the ticking on my engine was just noisy injectors, and the grinding noise was the idler pulley bearing playing silly buggers.
No 1, drop your accessory drive belt off, run engine if noise persists, do as Draven has suggested. If noise stops, check your water pump, alternator, idler pulleys, and crank pulley.
cheers Chuck.

Go to Supercheap and see if they have an actual mechanics stethoscope. It looks like a doctors one, but there is a thin steel rod at the end.
