do you reckon I'd be able to put a 165 head on a 185 block?
Yes should be no problems at all.
Yes they interchange for a fact.
Excellent, thanks heaps for the help mate!
May i ask why you would be doing this conversion ???
Is this a turbo setup ???

I too put on a 205 head onto a 185 block, no issues there.
Only thing to watch out for, is make sure you have the correct head gasket for the job. You'll need the MLS (multi-layer) head gasket from Toyota but please make sure it's the correct one!I had overheating issues on mine (partly) because the head gasket didn't have enough holes for the water galleys, and thus the water couldn't pass through as needed between head and block. Even if you have the 165 head and a 185 block, typically (only from what I've seen) the later generation head/block will usually have more water galleys and thus require a newer styled head gasket.
I'd probably go for a head gasket from a 185 GrpA which I believe has the same amount of water galley holes as the 205 does. Even if your current head/block doesn't have the use for these, it's better to over-compensate on this rather than having an overheating engine.
Cheers.
Here's what I mean...
ST185 block..
ST205 head..
you can see there's a hole there on each cyl in particular (on the head) which isn't catered for on the block. small thing to ponder, but saves a world of grief.![]()
