Bah! You gotta start somewhere, its not all that difficult with a little mechanical thought to it, and some motivation. What you need to do is get another 2T-G cheap, rebuild that one, then once its rebuilt (cos youre not gonna wanna rush it for your first time) take your car off the road to swap it. You can either leave your car to sit whilst you rebuild the second engine, or drive around on it some more (just keep the oil up to it you'll be fine - drove my 3T around for over a year using 1L of oil a day MINIMUM, and it was still going fine the day i pulled it out).Originally Posted by minxgirl

Otherwise a new set of rings, a quick hone (hopefully you get one with a good bore), and some new big end and main bearings and you should be good to go. Oh and hopefully your timing chain guides are still good, a set of guides and chains is gonna set you back $500nasty but worth it if you plan on keeping your car for a while.
Benefit is if you rebuild an engine, at least then you know its going to be fine for quite sometime, and shouldnt get too many problems for it.

Well...I rang Dominator - theyre nice helpful people - more so than the locals at least!!! However he says he cant get parts for the DOHC model? He said most single cam engine parts would likely be interchangeable - but he wasnt sure about the gaskets, guide plates, tensioners, pistons, and so forth. Obviously people here have rebuilt these before - so where did you get your stuff? What did you use?

Don't throw in the towel though, give it a go. you can buy the workshop manual for the 2TG off ebay for $44 (just type 2t-G into the search bar)

They have a full gasket set for $150.... but im pretty sure my supplier, just the local aussie auto, could get me 2T-G parts, they had listings on most things, so you should be able to get parts pretty easily.
If not, you will probably find almost everything through stewart wilkins motorsport...
I get trade price through my supplier (cos my dad and I are forever buying car parts) and i think sw even worked out cheaper a lot of the time

One option would be... Take the engine out yourself and strip it down completely (this doesn't take a lot of mechanical experience). - Just be careful everything you undo you label it/box it/etc so you know where it came from.
Send the parts off to be reconditioned - block, head, etc as you'll never have the equipment to do that yourself.
While they are away getting machined.. Order your new gasket kit, rings & bearings from Stewart Wilkins Motorsport.
When all the engine bits come back machined and you have all the new bits n pieces. Send a call out to any Toymodders in your area to come around and help re-assemble the engine.
Put on a BBQ & drinks and i'm sure you'll have people with experience come lend a hand!
Never buy things like bearings until after the machining is done - they may need to enlarge the bearing journals or undersize the crank if there is scoring to get rid of.

Yeah good point.. Well maybe whoever does the machining get them to supply the bearing & rings.. If they freak out about getting parts especially the gaskets tell them to talk to Stewart.

Just to address the basics first, what engine oil did they use ?
When does it blow the blue smoke ? Is it only straight after you start it, only once the engine warms up ? Ie no smoke for 30 seconds or so or is it just blue smoke all the time.
The first thing you need to do is try and work out what has failed and then decide just how much you want to spend and how far you want to go with the car. If you have the workshop manual check over your engine breathers firts, make sure they are not blocked and that the engine is breathing properly.
Then you should re-check the compression, remeber to hav ethe engine warm and the throttle wide open during the test.
Once thats done we have a small insight into the scope of your issue.
Then you need to decide up front what you want to acheive this time round. Is now the time you chase the extra power you were wanting or do you just rebuild to standard and redo the job at a more convienient time.
As for parts, most of them are out there if you know where to look. If you decide to ship the engine and pay to have it built then I would recommend Graham Wilkins (Stewarts brother) He was racing these engines when they first hit our shores and knows then inside out. His buisness is Wilkins performance engines at Seven Hills - 02 9674 7037. Make sure you tell him Rod from SAS sent you.
Once you decide if you want to rebuild it as standard or for some extra performance let me know.

A big thanks to everyone who has responded in my thread.
Im currently trying to work out how much money (in total) would need to be spent on the celica to leave nothing serious wanting...theres electrical issues, rust & panel damage issues, and the engine...
Im a bit dismayed by it all $1500 of miscellaneous work later after being assured the engine was "fine" by those bastard-arse mechanics I used to go to...That would have gone a long way towards more important things!
I love the car but Im not sure whether I can afford to fix it and keep it yet - so Im just weighing it up right now...I will get back to this thread later and respond to everyone I havent already responded to then. Thanks again everyone - so many helpful great ppl here.
