If your pulling it apart, bead blasting is the go.

Otherwise you can go for a rust converter, just make sure it is suitable for aluminium. A wire brush on a drill would also work.

    Theres just a few ideas.

not going to pull it apart, so bead blasting is out, sounds like some wire brushes and some converter are the way to go?

    Bead blasting for sure.

    Mine went from this :

    to this

EDIT: Ah.. you beat me. If you aren't going to pull it to bits then the wire wheel, steel wool with elbow grease is going to be the best bet in my opinion. Won't look as good as the bead blast, but better than nothing

try kenko degreaser 50/50 water mix spray on scrub with a stiff brush hose off
try different mixes "kenko does eat alloy if to strong or left on "
    cheap fix for around $10

Kenco = pretty normal run-of-the-mill Supercrap/Repco brand stuff. Most of their products are alright, nothing super amazing but nothing super crap either. If you pay more than $20 for any of their products you're probably paying too much, which should give you an idea

it is a costic degreaser so it will eat into alloy if you leave it long enough but in short doses it works a charm !

I think this is the Kenco stuff:

I used to have some of the pink caustic stuff, got it from a local industrial cleaning supplier in an unmarked bottle . Worked a treat, but I havent seen anything similar in shops.

If you go the bead blasting, make sure you clean it well, glass beads aren't good things for engines....

Anything with high alkaline content will scrub up aluminium nicely.

Im not sure of mag wheel cleaner contains alkaline but it sure does do a good job on aluminium. Leave it applied for a few minutes atleast.
We use it on alu cylinder heads at work to give them a polished shiny look. Just dip them in a tub of mag wheel cleaner for a few minutes.

they used to use this shit at my old work {redlands engines} for cleaning heads, the shit would come up absolutely awesome, but wouldnt take the sheen off like bead blasting.

so if u do pull it apart, take it to an engine shop and get them to do it
