    Default Car Locks

When i got my car it had the passenger side lock busted because someone tried to break in to it. How do you go about getting this sort of stuff fixed? do you just ask a normal locksmith? do they normally deal with car locks? since the lock barrel is completely stuffed would i need to get a working one from the wreckers and get the barrel modified to fit my keys?

What sort of car is it?

You may be able to buy new door locks and retain your current ignition barrel and fuel cap lock (assuming your car uses one) - meaning you will either need 2 or 3 keys for the car.

Or replace just the one barrel with a second hand one (with key) and then you will need one key for each door plus ignition etc.

It is very easy to change a door look but how you go about it i.e. replace everything and have one key for all or have mutliple keys for all the locks is up to you.

I am not familiar with the cost of having a barrel lock modified to suit an existing key so I guess the price of all the above options has to be taken into account too.

You can buy generic barrel lock sets that fit a range of cars and this is quite a cheap option, but it will depend on your type of car as to whether this is an option or not..

RT142, probably shares the same style lock as other Toyotas from that era so the cheapest option would be to take a barrel to the wrecker and look firstly for another Corona that has all its locks and a key, if no Coronas on the lot then check some other Toyotas and see if anything is the same and hope that there is a key for them.

Failing that you should be able to get a cheap replacement lock set for a Corona from Autobarn/Repco or similar.

If you find a lock to suit, as long as it shares the same key profile as your existing locks, you will be able to have it re-keyed.

By profile, I mean you will be able to slide the key into the lock but obviously it won't turn. Also, hold the keys side by side and look at them end-on.

Most locksmiths will do auto and household locks.

Re keying is a simple matter of dismantling the barrel and changing the pins to suit the new key. The pins are all numbered according to length.

I used to do house locks and believe me, it's the most fiddly, pain in the arse job to do....

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Go to a wreckers and remove a lock that is similar to the ones you have. Take this lock to a locksmith with your car keys. The locksmith should be able to change the barrel to fit your existing car keys. Then put the lock into the door and you're all done.

By the way, a locksmith will normally charge around $20 to re-key a car lock.

Sorry, forgot that bit in my last post.

    Cheers,

    Andrew
