    Default Bigger Cat increasing backpressure?

i just got this message from an ebay seller after enquiring about cats bigger than 3 inch.

a bigger cat wont allow more flow. a 3 inch hi flow is more than required for a 3 inch system. a bigger cat will cause more back pressure same as a bigger muffler would.

Is he full of shit? How could a bigger cat no flow more and how can a 3 inch cat flow as much as a piece of 3 inch pipe?

    thanks

kugz ol mate, you will have to do a bit of research.Tthere are cats, and there are cats.
An issue of ZOOM actually had a fairly good write up on various cats, versus Magic cats, versus straight pipe. One of the advertisers in the mag sells the magic cats, he owns a potent 1JZ-GTE RA23 Celica. The tests were carried out on that car.

    cheers Chuck.

    thats funny

flow is abotu cross-sectional area, and resistance. the cross-sectional area of the cat material and the structure changes it's resistance.
normal cats have many 1mm square holes, with larger area than the pipe that comes in, but higher resistance per unit area, because of more surface area...

the point of the cat is to get maximum exposure to surface area, so the gas gets catalyse din the fraction of a second as it goes thru the cat.

ebay sellers..... thats as bad as buying a plan or kit for a high speed boat from an ebay seller

heck, even legit businesses are bodgy at times...

    Hahahahaha.

The shop is Magic Performance in Carter Rd at Brookvale. They are a small shop doing good things. The Magic cat has a metal substrate and it flows well (ie good numbers on the flow bench), how well it works as a catalytic converter is another story. I believe that it is approved though, by which authority I am unsure, but it would be best to talk to Matt at Magic and ask him.
