i got the same problem with my 4agte the crank pulley doesnt line up, i heard that there is a few different pulleys when my car got tuned the guy said it was right even though it was not lined up.
hey people, once again another problem has come up with the ke30. Everything else is perfroming fine just need to sort out what i think is a timing issue.
heres the situation. map sensored 4agze in ke30, idles fine just when u rev it starts to miss/backfire. Took out plugs and there is signs of it running real rich. checked timing, except found something odd. The crank pulley timing marks dont line up with the marks on the block when #1 piston is up on TDC. cam timing however i know it correct. So how can this be when the crank pulley has a spline?
can anyone shed some light, im thinking bout just getting it tuned on a dyno, except im done everything myself and dont want to give it to someone else to finish it off when im so close!
thanks, bassy

One thing to remember is that the ZE's, well many I have seen, they have the timing belt covers embossed with the timing degree numbers above the crank pulley as found on NA 4A's. This poses a problem as with the ZE, you have to use the pointer that comes out from the timing belt tensioner to be your marker and move your timing around that.
There are 3 cuts into the ZE crank pulley. if my memory serves me correctly, these marks are at ,10 and 14 degress below top dead centre.

so how do i align my cams up then, do i use the crank pulley marks, or do i set it with #1 piston at TDC? Im pretty sure its set now with the #1 at TDC and then cam timing around that. is this right?
why do they have 3 marks on the pulley? which one do u go buy when using a timing light?
i really need a 4agze manual...
thanks, bassy
should be the same way as any 4age.

cuzzo ur a saviour again!

hey cuzzo, just reading these, and as we were discussing before. my TDC dosent line up with the marks on my crank pulley. TDC shows the timing marks way left of the block marks on mine? should i just go by the pulley?
bassy
crank pulleys do move, yes they are keyed, but they have a rubber ring between inner and outer.
I didn't think it was possible, but i've seen it at work, and it caused much grief. The tdc you find with the screwdriver down the hole is REAL tdc, so ignore the marks on your pulley and put a new white dot on so you can throw a timing light on it.

The spanner in my avatar is actually a 16mm, that's why it's still new
that makes alot of sense c2888! i did put a new line on it actually, but still thought something was way wrong...
but tomorrow im gonna do what cuzzo said and go over all my cam timing.
thanks to everyone, ill let you know how i go tomorrow!

Your memory is not serving you correctlyif my memory serves me correctly, these marks are at 5,16 and 20![]()
The ZE marks are 0, 10 and 14 degrees BTDC

ok people heres an udpate, i checked over all the cam timing and that seems ok, crank pulley must have slipped so i put a new mark on it using #1 at TDC. Then noticed that 3 and 2 plugs were switched around on the coil packs, so i switched them round.
Then i started it up then checked the timing and its at 10 on the block... everything looked and sounded fine, so i took it for a drive. putted around fine but when i went to give it some it dosent really go. dosent die or anything just has no grunt. PSI is reading about 10...
not really sure what to do.... should i just go get a tune and dyno?
thanks people, bassy
10psi and no grunt sounds like heavily retarded spark or cams are wrongly timed. Are you sure the ignition timing is right? I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I've never seen a 'slipped' 4AGZE crank pulley and I've dealt with a few of them.
Assuming timing is retarded, an easy check might be to advance your timing a few say 6 -10degs and initially be gentle with the gas pedal (I'm not saying don't boost but slowly bring the pressure up slowly) while listening for knock until you are confident there is none, and then decide was the car better to drive?

n not really... i set it up on tdc and put a new mark on the crank pulley, then timed it with a timing light says 10... could it have some thing to do with my igniter wiring to my coils? eg out put wires on wrong coil? the thing is it idles fine and can be driven (cant be good), just real slow when on the gas.
