Aircon is a simple affair if you pull it from a wrecked hilux.

All the conencts etc are already in the engine loom and under the dash. All you have to do is get the condensor box from under the dash, along with all its plumbing. The A/C switch out of the controls, all the obvious plumbing and condensor radiator, dryer, and bolt it all in, get gas, and away you go.

It works out to be around 500-600 from the wreckers, but the problem is mainly a lot of these cars have had head ones, so finding a complete kit will be difficult.

A/C kits are still around the same price now brand new for what you have been quoted.

We had aftermarket (non genuine) air con fitted to a '96 Hilux ute that I used to drive for work.

It was a fully integrated system and a very neat job, even down to the plumbing.

It was a place called Aaron Auto Electrics in Ringwood (If they are still there) I've lived in Brisbane now for a few years.

I also had them redo the aircon in my HZ Kingswwod. It had factory air, but I upgraded to R134 gas and a compressor from a VL Commodore. (The old delco comp even slowed the 308 down and made it heat up too much in heavy traffic)

Again, a top job. No complaints whatsoever.

    Cheers

I have just finished installing my aircon in my 94 Hilux (22R). Was a piece o piss in the end.

I sourced a complete factory setup from Mr Spares in Sydney (specialist Hilux wrecker) and just started bolting everything up inc compressor and brackets, evaporator, condensor, receiver drier and all piping. Then just had all O rings replaced, compressor oiled and regassed.

Spent $500 on aircon gear and about $300 having it oiled, gassed, new receiver drier and a check of my handywork. Aftermarket quote was $1800.

The good thing is that everything else was actually already in the car - vacuum sensors, idle up and loom plugs. It was seriously much easier than I ever expected.

Correction: I referred to Aaron auto elec in my last post, it actually changed names and became Norm's auto air.

    Sorry for the mix up.

By the way, I can't recall the price of the Hilux installation. (My employer paid for it)

What I can tell you is they only charged $200 for the retro fit work on my Kingswood.
They spent quite a bit of time on it too. Even resprayed the compressor that I supplied!!
