Sounds like my ZE when it was first running, though the fact the idle had to be bumped up quite a few turns should have been a sign that something was wrong.
It seemed to run fine, but had no real grunt. We noticed the exhaust manifold was glowing after very short drives up the street and back. It ended up being the exhaust cam was a tooth out...
If I were you I would be pulling the crank pulley off, checking that the notch in the crank timing pulley aligns with the bump on the oil pump body, then you are 100% sure its where it needs to be, then double check your cam timing, then put the pulley back on and check your new timing mark for correctness, then check your ignition timing.
And as above, time it using the AW method.
