There are plenty of designs around for a binary counter, which is basically what you would need to apply some logic to controlling the 2 solenoids.

I did at some stage make a design with 3 flip-flops and a bunch of gates to control the 2 solenoids plus the lockup solenoid, but never bothered to prototype it. It would be quicker to write some code on an 8 bit micro to do the job than to prototype the discrete logic version (if someone has a PAL or GAL programmer it could be done on one IC as well).

As Toysrme said - for the simplicity go with the switch, and as sideshow said - if you want something more advanced go with something that's already been developed. Unless you want to learn, but you'll need at least some electronic background, or be a quick learner.

FWIW there are non-OBDII auto transmissions that have solenoid controlled line pressure, eg JZS147 2JZ-GTEs and VVTi 1JZ-GTEs.

The OBDII autos not only have solenoid controlled line pressure, but they also have solenoid controlled accumulator pressure (don't actually know what that means, but the accum pressure gets reduced electronically on gear changes), in addition to the lockup solenoid (which is also variable to adjust lockup pressure).
The 5 or 6 speed autos have 3 solenoids to control the gear selection, and a fourth solenoid to control engine braking (no idea how it works, but sounds good).

So, is a tweaked standard auto box and a kit like kdog's as fun to drive as a manual?

Im wondering if its worth converting my future 1UZ to a manual, or just taking it (A340x) to MV Autos for a valve kit, and then add a paddle shift system (i would build this).

I understand that engine braking only works in a few of the lower gears?
Is this as disconcerting to drive as it sounds when manual shifting?

on the old autos u dont get any engine braking in 1st and 2nd unless u move the shifter into thos egears
when u downshift it hits a neutral untill u press on the accelerator
so if u press abit on accelerator when downshifting u will get a gear

it suks abit but being able to change up gears when u like is much better

only downfall is no proper 4th gear

they badly need a 4th gear and not just an overdrive

not as good as a manual but i dont want to spend 2000 to go manual especially when i drive to canberra melb and brissy sometimes for work

but a shift kit transforms it so much

ill see how much they cost me but somewhere around 330 to 350 maybe

for abit more i can wire it up to the correct plug on the gbox as i have afew a340 solenoid plugs in my box of junk

I've found good value in using a few cheap diodes etc. stuffed into a jiffy box, and then shifting with the standard shifter. If you don't like the detent positions on the standard shifter, a few minutes with a welder and die grinder will fix that for you. Total cost of less than $10. Combined with a shift kit, it's a good value auto.
