Remember to unplug your ignition coil output lead before doing a comp test, you dont want it actually starting on 3 cylinders while you are doing it.
Also, dont touch wood for the rain to stop, we still need rain.

Chris, plugs should be out of all cylinders anyway when doing the compression test.

If budget extends, I would recommend buying a compression tester that actually screws into the spark plug hole rather than a cheap and nasty Supercheap type that pushes into the hole. Usually, this is the cause of most test variability.

Im all paranoid about my car I dont want it hailed on, and I wanna change the oil (it's new oil in it but its thin and crapped out), and I wanna know what the compression is doing *tears hair out* I have a sinking feeling that the results of that test are gonna be bad *sigh* /end rant

Also Im looking more and more at that smoke its blowing and I think it is bluish white...

Just a quick update - changed oil yesterday and cleaned plugs...didnt get to the compression test - but I have the tester now and Im hoping the break in the weather holds off enough I can do it when my b/f gets home and can mind the kids at lunchtime today Having some electrical probs but I made another thread about that...
PS. I am pretty proud of myself - it was the first oil change *I* have actually ever done and I went it alone *we* have done plenty - just that Id never done it *LOL* (It was way easy once I bought a new socket set cause the b/f is a toolwrecker and his 3/4 was literally broken )

    Compression test done...*sigh*...
    dry test:
    135
    140
    140
    140

    wet test
    170
    170
    210
    170

I assume this means I need new rings...is this how petrol could be getting in the sump?

OK so Google tells me the petrol getting into the sump is the compression rings, and the oil burning (smoke from exhaust w/e) is the oil rings....
    Does that sound about right?

    Jill,

Just found this thread. I have already replied in your compression test results thread BUT. 2 things of note for your DRY compression test. Dana has it covered well but some extra info.

1stly the test has to be carried out on a warm engine, not a cold one.

2ndly the test must be carried out at wide open throttle, ie accel foot to the floor

When does the car blow smoke and for how long ?

What oil are you using ?

Oh and check your breathers. If they are blocked it will presurise the engine and push oil past the gaskets.

i've been following this process and tried it yesterday.
    This is on a 18rgu +E (EFI) 18RG CAMS, 9.7 COMP PISTONS.
IT HAS BEEN REBUILT BY ME, A House mechanic.
new rings. wet test is at 135 - 140 on piston 1,2,4 piston 3 at 100.
I did not have the engine at operating temp, won't start alarm kill switch problem.
Would No. 3 be due to A. new rings not turned correctly ie. gaps to close on oil& fuel rings.
    B. valve not sealing
    C.other, your call.
head was good on visual, I'm unsertain on timing though, I doubt that could be reason for 1 cyl to be out.
any help. maybe this Q will extend from current thread if not sorry for Hi-jack.
