With the oil cooler did you get a oil-filter relocation kit?
Might be worth getting one, makes it easier for oil cooling and ease of changing filters.IMO.
Alright, ill lay it down...
86kw 4age
high comp pistons
massive cam (to be replaced with stock) -cheers DaveW
dual twinthroat weber's (42dcoe's 33mm choke)
all injection and ecu components removed.
port & polish
tuned length 4-1 extractors into 2 1/2" exhaust
I know i need to get the carbs re-jetted to suit the standard cams, but what else should i be doing to get this engine ready?
Its getting put into a ta22 with a standard ae86 gearbox behind it, clutch is pretty new so its staying. Engine came out of another 22 so I have the crossmember to suit, the gearbox was the standard 20 spline though. As far as I know, the only mods I need for the gearbox are - New lines for clutch master to slave cylinder, shortened tailshaft, shifter hole re-positioned and quite possibly new gearbox bolt holes tap and died.
So far:
Bought new welsh plugs.
Reco'd altenator
Got new brake/shoes pads all round.
DBA Gold Cross drilled slotted rotors.
Pedders suspension kit
-Springs, 2" lower
-front shocks
-22mm F sway bar
KONI rear shocks
KMAC rear sway bar (crazy little unit that links the rear lower control arms)
Standard rear sway bar as well.
Nolathane control/trailing arm bushes.
Nolathane panhard rod bushes.
New Solid State Fuel pump and filters
New Fuel Lines
New Oil filter and 5W-40 Shell Helix Ultra
New Oil Catch Can
New Oil Cooler
New Thermo Fan
Upgraded radiator
Cleaned up and painted extractors.
High pressure water gun treatment, all surface rust/old paint removed.
LOTS of engine enamel and heat proof paint.
Rocker covers looking nice.
(will try to get a photo up over the next week or so)
New panels all round (currently a kangaroo MAGNET) and most of the gear needed to spray, planning a backyard job but ill leave it in the hands of someone more experienced. Mags and paint will come LAST.
Planning to get:
New engine and gearbox mounts
Thrust bearing.
Gearbox/diff fluid & nulon gbox/diff treatment - great stuff!
Timing Belt
Altenator/WP belt (No AC, PS)
*Maybe a lightened flywheel, but i dont want to spit one at high rev's
The suspension is being built to suit the engine and balance.
Any idea's or general input into what else I should be thinking of would be great, I want to get this done right the first time!
Cheers everyone!

Why are you putting in the AE86 box. They are pretty much the same strength, but you will need a new tailshaft for the AE86 box. The casings are the same too, so you wont need to do any other mods.

sounds like a kick ass project.
only thing i would look into is an aftermarket ignition system or work at a points/vacuum advance system for the dizzy. i think it is the norm here and overseas to switch to aftermarket ignition. mind you it would be nice for someone to come up with a cheaper option. i know there are a few people playing around with dizzy's but it seems to limited success!!!
using the stock 4AGE dizzy will give you a locked ignition curve as there is no ecu to control the timing. you will still make power but it will have a limited power band and not particularily nice in the lower rev range (moreso if you fit the big cams you want!!). if this is a track car it may not be such an issue as you will see alot of revs and wide openthrottle action!! for a daily it may be worthwhile looking into the ignition side of things to help make it a bit more streetable.
other than that you have all bases covered, well planned sounds like a cool car
good luck!!
Is currently running a Hec (or Mec) 715 bosc aftermarket ignition coil. Gonna have to re-wire everything into the new car though. It was a fair bit sluggish in the lower end but I had put that down to the cams, we'll throw the stockers back in and see how it goes.
Keep it coming guys!![]()
Face the block & head
ballance the entire bottom end - pulley to clutch
what cams did you have before?
Already been balanced![]()
Did not get the oil filter relocation kit, however I have been putting serious consideration into this as the filter sits right underneat the extractors.
Cams that where in there were 300deg 80/20 overlap, Ivan Tighe units.
Stockers bring it back to 242deg, 60/40 I think??
Either way, I want some power UNDER 6500rpm so stock is the go.

why would you ditch the injection?
reinstall injectors, pull 33mm chokes out of carbies... voila, 42mm ITB's![]()

i take it your going to do some circuit racing in this machine?
i cannot sress this enough.. get a larger BAFFLED sump with all the good gear in it.
my car isnt all that quick (4age ke25).. did a 1.55 around winton long circuit, but i lost oil pressure around the big l/h sweeper and spun all my rod bearings
so yeah big sump, oil cooler and relocation kit, big f off cooling system and all should be well
The TA22 box would need the belhousing changed to fit the 4AGE and I have read that they can suffer from gearbox oil leaks with the A series bellhousing.Originally Posted by takai

Why not do a DCOE injection conversion?
I am building a 40mm dual-throat weber with injector holes in the CNC machine at school.
It's a simplified and crude design but it will work.
One thing stopping me running 42mm DCOE injection - COST u silly buggers....
to put all the shit BACK onto that engine to get it to run injection would just be a bitch, id be better off getting a fresh import and starting over. Still, its $$$ I dont have either way.
Ta22 gbox - 20 spline, not good behind the 4A
Ae86 - 22 spline, stock behind 4A, fair bit stronger
I got the 22 spline yolk off a sprinter to mate to my standard tailshaft for this conversion.
Was planning some circuit work, but an easier fix is just to up the oil level's a bit over full.
Baffled sump would be the goods as I have to replace the sump thats on there anyway, but no idea where to get one or cost.
