Default Corolla, clicking noise on wheels while turning.

yeh my brothers, AE101 rolla, whilst turning made a clicking sound on left hand side, so had a look, the CV was changed, and bearing is fine... thought would solve problem, but still continues to do so... now has started on the right hand side as well,
so not CVs, not wheels bearings ?
i was thinking the brake pads havent been changed in quite a while, so will do those next time i see him, but could low break pad level have an indicator for it ? say a rubbing clicking sound ?
the car is in brissy, so i cant go have a look at moment unfortunately.
    but yeh any ideas ?

    cheers guys

some later model brakes have a small steel piece at the edges, so that when they get low, the steel makes a squeeling sound as it rubs perpendicular against the disk - definitely not a clicking sound though. As for your clicking sound, ??? maybe something to do with your power steering???

low brakes can make anything from a ticking to a scratching or squealing sound..

and yea for CV joints.. if it was driven till it was dry of grease and was ticking, it might be a while with the new grease before the ticking goes away.. unless of course u're using a new CV.. anyway give it some time it should be okay.. otherwise investigate further..

u can see the level of brake pads by just removing the wheel.. or if u got mags with very big gaps between spokes.. shouldn't be that hard

My 102 has a knocking noise from the front (haven't narrowed it down to a particular wheel yet) when I go around a downhill or uphill right-hander on a trailing throttle at about 50km/h, doesn't happen on any other corners though. Could be CVs, haven't had time to check though

Hi I dont know much about cars and Ive got no idea what kind of steering is in that car but when I had my Minx (rack and pinion) it started doing that because the steering was fked. Had to replace the steering column - I was told each click was the little tiny steel ball grating/shearing off the spiral thing is was s'posed to run along on the steering column - could could feel it in the steering wheel but it started on one side and did sort of sound like it was related to the front wheels Anyways - probably totally useless information there but ya never know hey?

perhaps the changed CV was fecked too
does it do it more with greater steering input? does it do it while going straight?

    triple check the CV's....

not while straight at all, and yes comes on quicker say when hitting a corner faster then usual, from what i remember.
yeh might need another check over, is there anything else i could check ?

have you checked the wheel weights? the wheel might be flexing enough for the wheels weights to be hitting the steering knuckles. this would only happen if the car's had different wheels(ie wider or wrong offset) put on it.

this happened to me when i put datsun wheels on my old toyota, except they were hitting all the time, not just cornering.

I still think cv's, most other things should make the noise while going straight as well as when turning, or like stew said hub nut.. hub nut would be more of a thud as you start to turn than a click i would think though

mmmmmmmm nah wouldnt be wheel nuts or hub nuts, its hard to do alot about it right now as my brother lives in brisvegas and visits me in coffs, and when he does we always try work out things with his rolla, i suppose the CV would be the the best guess, as its a definite clicking, though having had it replaced it makes it a bit more mysterious..

goin on that it now does it both sides could this be a sign of steerin rack problems or something related ?

unlikely to be a rack problem as it wouldn't be a ticking, more just a noise when you turn the wheel (as that's the only time the parts really move)

if it's not cv's there's a remote chance that the brake lines or bit of wire, or something like that may not be clipped onto the strut as they should be, and comes into contact with the wheel when its turned
