How to tell if a 4agze e58 is lsd?

Hi

Just a quicky is there any easy way to tell if a e58 is an lsd equipped box? is there any distinguishing external features? will the jack the car up and spin the wheels trick work?

In a word yes.

Jack the back up (edit: or front ), box in neutral, spin a wheel, if the other wheel spins the SAME way its LSD. Also can put it in gear, and if LSD wheel will be frikken hard to turn, or else if not LSD other wheel may spin backwards, but wheel will be easy to turn. (make sure hand brake is off ).

just take it for a drive,rev it upand dump the clutch. if it's an lsd box,you will leave two equal length burn out marks. this test is fun,too!

i was told that if you look thru the driveshaft hole and theres a hole straight thru with nothing thru the middle.... its lsd.

its not lsd if there is anything ie. a rod passing thru in the opposite direction.

I believe rollamods identified the LSD box by it "having" a rod passing through the center if you look through the driveshaft holes.

If it has a small disc of metal, with a tiny little 4-5mm diameter hole or so, then it is NOT an LSD, i've got 2 boxes atm with the small disc with hole in it, and they are both non-lsd.

I have one box with a bar going through it, it may or may not be an LSD, JP's one was an LSD that has the bar through it, however I believe standard C5x boxes have the bar through them and they sure aren't LSD.

As for a box with straight nothing in the center I've yet to see one personally, but would be interested to see if that is indeed the LSD box. I haven't actually tested my E58 with bar through it to see if it's an LSD or not.

Finally. Witzl did an article on here that gave vernier caliper measurements of the driveshaft spline lengths for an LSD box... they are different shafts and a complete pain in the backside to find a set.

My E58 is LSD and has a rod going through the middle.

Pull the speedo drive out and you should be able to see the diff. If should be fairly easy to tell if it's limited slip or not..
