MA61 1JZGTTE Gearbox fitting Q's

Hey guys i'm fairly new to the toyota game, i've got an MA61 with a 1jz in it.

I've lost second gear on my W58 and have a replacement sitting on the floor.

I'm going to slap in the new one tomorrow. Just wondered what i should be looking out for and any tips that will make this easier???

I know how to do all the mechanical shit but because i'm doing it on car stands in the driveway i want to know what annoying problems i'm going to face!

Norbie tells me i have to lift the front of the engine as high as possible to get to the top bellhousing bolts which makes sense. I assume i should undo the engine mounts and can just jack her up from the front?

What other problems can i expect to face?

loosen engine mounts and tilt - jack at front & another at rear - trolley jack with wide top to take gearbox... PM wilbo666 about this as he has same setup as you.

replace the rear main seal while the box is off?

crack and hand-tighten the fill and drain bolts on the gearbox before you put gearbox into car

if no spare output shaft available to block off output hole, drain gearbox oil before tilting.

If removing flywheel to do seal, borrow a clutch alignment tool - otherwise allow 4 hours and extended swearing vocabulary to get clutch in right spot.

Don't forget to take out the gear shifter

Yeah as said, loosen the engine mount bolts off and jack the front of the engine (take your IC pipes off first ).

If you have a dellow bellhousing there isn't a whole lot of clearance to get the box in and out before the top of the bellhousing fouls on the car...(this problem is exacerbated in mycar due to my clutch being wider than normal and not providing much room to get the input shaft into position).

If you have a toyota bellhousing it should all be apples

No real major tips tho I'm affraid. It is easy enoguh pretty well.

Thanks guys! That's the sort of stuff i wanted to see. I've been building/tinkering with Subaru's for the last 6 years so it's all a bit new for me!

Not sure on what bellhousing is in there, i havn't even looked yet! Fingers crossed it's a toyo one. (i have a hunch it is)

I won't bother with the rear main seal for now as i have another 1jz sitting at my mates workshop that i'll be slapping in once i freshen it up! (unless this one is shagged)

What sort of oil do you guys run to increase longevity of these boxes? (i have a tendency to break traction often)

What they said. I dropped the W58 out of my Supra yesterday and the whole job was done in about an hour. Obviously I've had quite a lot of practice now.

As for oil, given the nature of a typical W58 failure (broken teeth) I doubt any super-duper oil is going to make a difference.

I should have read your post before calling! In fact i should have just paid you $50 or alcohol and had your assistance for a while!

It's been 2 hours of working now, i've just gotta jack the engine up a little!

Alright! 3 hours and finally all the bolts are out! Just setting up the trolley jack now to lower the box on!

Its going to get dark soon. Hurry up! Good luck with it. If you dont have a clutch allignment tool, try and line it up as close as possible by eye. This is what i did and it slipped in first try.

ok i couldn't quite get it out... It's separated from the engine, the input shaft appears to be still in the throwout bearing...

It looks like the bellhousing is fouling on the transmission tunnel... I'm assuming i must have a dellow bellhousing! (the metal looks quite different to the rest of the box?

I'll get back into it tomorrow and see if i can get it the last few cm's.
Any tips?

If its fouling on the trans tunnel, you might have to raise the engine slightly further. Also getting a couple crow bars inbetween the bell housing and engine block to pry it off works.

Damn that sucks eh. Same sort of issue as me.... the gearbox has trouble clearing the splines of the clutch plate.

Have you loosened the engine mount bolts off? And jacked the front of the engine.

Another suggestion is to place a jack on the passenger side chassis rail and jack the rear of the engine to the drivers side a few CM...this gave me the clearance I needed..

Yes, thanks for all that clearance at the top dellow...I suggest that perhaps the bellhousing doesn't need to protrude from the engine at 90deg for over 4"

Well i got back under the car this morning and it took 2 minutes to get it out. (I liked the tip about using a big steel bar... )

Now it's just a matter of changing the bellhousings over and the extension housing and we'll be ready to slap her back in! I think it's going to be too tricky to get it back in by myself, so i gotsta wait until after 6 when another set of hands can assist
