    try to guess

are you sure all the bolts and buts are done up tight?
were they new or fuc... i mean.. second hand from an importer?
were they ok before the car sat?

basically work out if it is the pillowballs knocking.. or the shock insert (if there is one) is buncing in the tube.. or if they are bottom adjustable.. it isn't bouncing off bottom etc..

who told you they need a rebuild?

the guys who do bilsteins (near tempe) are meant to be good but dunno if they touch the cheaper stuff...

Sydney shocks should be able to help you out if they can be repaired.

err.... why on earth would coilovers get clunky when sitting there?

    unless the shafts rust?

think abotu it.... how would a shock.. which gets absolutely punished when on the car.. suddenly die when it is left to it's own devices?

the myth probably comes from people buying absolutely fucked 2nd hand imported shocks but being told they were good when they left japan... (because, if you really want to know, most shocks that get bought by importers ARE fucked... thats why they are cheap....) so then the importer spins the story that the shocks get samaged by being left alone for too long.. but sorry, you can't have a refund.

if they clunk and no bolts are looses, it's rooted.
new coil-overs are not very expensive maybe $1.5-2k for most of the TEINs?

gotta remember that most toymodders are povo sonsabitches though.... 2k is big dollars, haha.

I remember my teins kept smashing the spacer under the pillowball mounts.... caused knocking... eventually replaced it with a "custom" (high tensile nut ground to same dimensions) spacer and it never happened again after that.

Rebuilding coilovers shouldn't be that much.... i got quoted $80 each for new seals and $150 if shaft needs to be replaced.... this was an over the phone quote from some place in brissy.

(i know toymodders are povo.. otherwise they would be modding cars with higher base value but.. spend 5-10K on an engine.. and not 1-2K on shocks?)

    how can they sieze?

you mean by rusting of the shock rods?

inside should not sieze.. unless they somehow got water in there and rusted?

    or??

if 35 year old shocks that have sat for at least the last 5 or 6 years don't sieze.. why would coilovers?

Like everyone has said check all bolts. Just last night i was driving and there was a nice clunk going on. It was getting quite loud so i checked the pillowball and where the shock bolts to the strut top was loose. It got rid of a noise that sounded like it was under the car too but it was only the top that was loose.
