You can buy a W50 for $100 on the trading post (there were two on ebay for $50 with no bids) and behind a 12R or 18R it will never ever blow up (if used within the realms of common sense - easy enough to wreck anything if you mistreat it).

These old things were the standard 5 speed of choice behind 302s, 308s and worked Holden sixes for years.

Supra box is massive overkill. WOFTAM behind an 18RC.

Also just so you're aware, my father in law had an RN40 with a 12R and L40. Dad has an RN41 with 18R and L40. Now, the location and style of the gearbox mounts was totally different. To place a W50 in my father in law's RN40 would have required the fabrication of a new crossmember because the mount location is some 10 cm further back (because of the different extension housing which encases the 5th gear). There were no additional holes to move the crossmember back either.

I wouldn't be surprised if the RN31 is like my father-in-law's Hilux.

You really have to get under there to see what I mean. It's no biggy, but by no means is it a 'bolt in' affair.

    Hope that helps.

    Disagree politely.

Its a lot different putting a 5 speed with 50K behind a holden in 1987 to buying a discarded heap of gearbox in a wreckers in 2006.

Hey you can have my spare P51 I just pulled out at 145000 km it only whines in 5th gear and should last another 50000.

Except I need to put it back in as the heap of crap I bought off the net is worse.

I just did a cheap buy off ebay for $140 and have a pile of whining scrap metal that is stiff in 4th. And its a supposedly was a low km P51.

    2 cents.

Think i agree with you now, column vs floor shift didnt even register in my brain, must be that beer thread going on at the moment. you are the Big Cheese after all...err i mean Giant Tomato *bows down*

I believe what Norbie said bout his W50 and 18RGE, and ive seen on this forum that it has been done successfully many a time.

I just put a $100 W50 behind a fully rebuilt/worked 18RG, it aint up and running yet, but when it is (very soon) i let ya's know how it goes, i got the faith .

    Hey thanks all for replies....

Will go and search for a W50 at a few wreckers in a week or two..
Worse case senario is the gearbox mount will be different right?

And smokem1, pretty sure you right with the RN31, RN41...all i read was between late 70's(78 i think) to 83ish was RN41's.....but on my plate it says RN31, and is registered as a 1980 hilux...

Find a good quality W50, and that will handle the 18-RC with ease, I have an RA40 w/ an 18-RC and W50 and the gearbox is still going strong after my thrashing, and from the mechanic i bought it from, he recond. the motor at about 200000kms (odo only goes up to 100000kms) but never touched the gearbox, and ive got it at about 30000kms after the rebuild.

PS when I do my engine conversion (1ggte or 1ggze to be different) a mate has called dibs to my w50 for his 202 HQ monaro, so it will pbly get more of a thrashing before layed to rest.

sounds like the W50 is the way to go then aye..
So between $50 and $100 is a fair price for one of these buggers?

Also the diff in lux, its a G series 8inch'er....(sounds tuff saying that out loud )
these the same diffs they put behind SR20's, 13B's ect in older cars?...
if so, they handle a fair bit of punishment right?

    Default Remains of a W50

A picture is worth 1000 words

I agree it can happen to any gearbox.

    This was a $50 wreck.
