AE86 T50 JDM/AUDM Differences

now this is a largely debated topic but...

ive been told by a few people that they are identical. absolutly no difference.
but then again ive been told that they have different shifter feeling and the gearset is set up differently, while retaining the same ratios that is.

does anyone have any concrete evidence that proves/disproves the theory they are the same

and if different, how so?

The AU and JDM gearboxes are exactly the same, the only differing parts are the bellhousing (clutch slave on drivers side on JDM), and the speedo drive is for 4.3 or 4.1 gearing rather than 3.9

That is the sum total of the changes, i have had a JDM and AU gearbox open side by side and those are the only changes.

Yeah, so far all I've found to be different are is the bellhousing and the clutch slave.

I converted to the JDM box after my engine conversion and all i cant find any difference in feel. Except that my JDM box has broken 2nd gear synchro

JDM boxes with clutch on the other side... What about cars sold in Japan with 3A or 4A engines, instead of the 4AG?

I might even be cheeky and mention that some were sold as autos, too...

Going by my version of the epc (euro/usa) and dumping out a list of gearbox innard it seems that later boxes, really late, have a revised 1st and second gear. And a different casing.
So no, they are not all the same, are you likely to ever get one of these 'late boxes' slim to none. the change started august 86, and ran through till the demise of rwd corollas in july of 87. Happy hunting

please explain 'revised' 1st and 2nd gear

According to the parts list the counter gear did not change and the revised gear can be substituded in an early model (8308-8502) box. as long as you also use the updated syncro and selector ring as well

Summary

A: the ratios on the boxes are the same
B: but the syncro's for 1st and 2nd gear are different
C: updated gears can be used in early boxes
D: updeted syncros can not unless you get the updated gear as well
