up tp dec 93 its a gen 2 1 after dec93 its a gen 3 1
I am looking for a gen 3 3sge water pump . I rang Toyota today they said there are two types for MR2 upto oct '93 $175 or $205 after oct '93. Bursons list one type which is $90Does anyone know what the differences might be between the two genuine versions from Toyota
I think I saw that there was a different number of teeth on them ?
any help
Thanks.

The toyota ones come with the full casing (where the thermostat sits in etc) and gasket set, where as the aftermarket ones are just the pump itself, you have to seperate the old pump from the casing which is a crappy job thanks to a phillips drive screw which is done up impossibly tight, then clean up the mating surface, apply the new gasket and attach the new pump to the old casing
I've heard that aftermarket pumps have inferior impellor blades which don't move as much water as the genuine ones, however I can't confirm that as I've only ever used genuine myself
But for $90 though I'd be seriously considering using the aftermarket pump even myself
Actually I'm thinking of celica 3sge's (gen 1's) but I'd assume the water pump design wouldn't have changed greatly nor would the difference between aftermarket and genuine pumps

For your info.............
The 3S-FE water pumps are exactly the same deal, only slightly cheaper.
I nearly passed out at the price from Toyota, so I fitted a non genuine one $79. This was done just on 12 months ago and has been working fine. I'm not sure about the impeller being different either, however with my Wife doing short stop-start trips in the Brisbane heat with the aircon going constantly, it appears to be moving enough coolant.
I suppose it would also depend on the condition of the rest of the pump body as to whether you replace just the pump or the whole unit. In the case of ours, it was just the seal on the impeller shaft leaking, the rest was fine.
Cheers.
The 3s-fe pumps are not the same, the 3sge pumps have a counter sunk bolt at the top right which are phillips head, the 3sfe pump does not (i believe it's a 10mm or 12mm head bolt). This is because on a 3sge if this bolt is not countersunk it will foul on the timing belt on it's way between the exhaust camshaft and the water pump pulley!

Thanks everyone for the replys.
DALE - I just need the front pump section as I have already pulled this apart without any problems. Looking at my sparesa last night I cannot see any difference between the pump from a gen 3 3sge and a gen1 3sgte. I will try the pump from Bursons.
hell for $140nz ill send you a brand new genuine one
Dale,
My apologies, I may not have explained myself very well.
I wasn't implying that the 3S-GE and 3S-FE water pumps are physically the same, I am well aware of the difference.
What I meant was, when purchasing a new pump, the option to buy genuine and receive both parts of the pump or buy non-genuine and receive the front half is the same.
Sorry for any confusion caused.
I have ordered the non genuine pump which is listed as suiting from 1990 to 1999 3sge models. I will try to get trade price which should be slightly cheaper.
I know it is not an original part but I definately don't need the whole assembly.
Thanks for the posts.
It's all good, I took what you said in the wrong contextOriginally Posted by ajh

Just to let people know - I got the water pump today and on the box it states that it suits Camry SV21 and 3sgte engines. The pump looks exactly the same as the toyota original even down to the same impeller. It came with all gaskets and the o ring as well.![]()
if its that GMB junk, i wouldn't even install it.
I'd seriously consider paying the extra $$ for a Toyota genuine water pump.
As with most toyota gen parts they last an eternity compared to aftermarket. (in my experience anyway)
