    Default turbo oil return lines

Well I have found the cause of my smoke coming off my turbo. I redid the gaskets in and out and went for a little test drive and it was still doing it.

Had a look at the turbo oil return line and the thing has become so brittle it has snapped in 2 places. This is in about 1500kms driving max. I was using a regular sort of oil pipe with heat wrapping around it as it has to go close to the exhaust manifold to not go horizontal.

Interestingly, the heat wrap has split and is covered in oil and this wasn't cheap wrap either.

I don't want to use braided line as it is a low pressure line and I can't really see the point in going to that expense. Just want something that can handle the heat. I have seen other pipes which are said to have higher heat handling capabilities. Is there any other options? What do other people use and has anyone else had this problem?

Pipe was cracked huh? So much for my gasket idea then-diagnosis over the net is mostly hit and miss I guess.........

Yup-second what Clint said-Silicone hose. Thats's what I have going down past the manifold. It wasn't cheap (20-30 for 200mm)-but was less than a braided teflon bit and is a set and forget item. Do still wrap it to protect it from the radiant heat off the manifold though.

Have you hooked up overdrive yet?
And what about the wolf doing ignition timing??

    Merry Xmas mate.

Thanks for your help Sean, I am sure doing the gaskets now was a good idea anyway.

Rung a place today to get some silicone hose but they can't get it until next week so I will have to wait.

Haven't hooked up overdrive yet as I have had very little time to look at that. Is on my TO DO list for today though.

I am thinking about giving my car to a different guy (auto electrician) to wire up the Wolf as I don't really want to stuff it up and then not be able to drive. Was going to ring up for a quote today on that also.

    Merry xmas to you to

    Chris

I've had similar trouble with oil return lines and for piece of mind in the end i made the whole thing from thin metal pipe and just braized it together with the oxy. Its that funny alloy pipe that toyota use for the standard oil feed/returns on their turbos.
There are also places around that sell more industrial type hoses, I know of one in Newcastle. The hoses for my remote oil filter kept melling or going mushy from the oil and they run near the dump pipe.
I got some proper oil hose from there that is about three times thicker than normal hose and is rated to 200psi or something.
A Pirtec type hose guy recommeded it, its survived so far
silicon hose is probably good as well if you can find it big enough

I would have thought braided line cheaper than silicon hose, ive had no dramas, just got pricked by it 50000000000 times when i was putting it on.

Best way to get out of being jabbed when putting it on is, after you have cut the piece to size then just get some heatshrink and put it over the end of the hose. That way all of those nasty sharp bits are kept out of the way, and it looks neater to boot. Dont have any pics, but ill take some soon.

    braided line isnt that expensive...

I used some for the clutch master to slave line when I converted the soarer to manual, and ill be using it for the feed and return line when the new turbo conversion is completed too...why bother with anything thats insuperior...at least with the braided you know you wont have to change it for a long long time...

Don’t you have to have the fancy fittings for braided lines? I used to just run regular oil pipes with clamps on each end. Can you do that with braided lines?

whenever I have used braided lines I have run the fittings but this might be a problem in the situation you are in, unless you can strip a section of the braid off the rubber section of the line and clamp over the rubber section so still 99% of the line is protected by the metal area...then maybe just heat wrap the unprotected area?

Just rain Enzed and they reckon they have clamps that I can use that work in the same way as the ones I had so I don't have to change the flanged off the turbo or sump (which has already been changed) For reference it is $12 per clamp and $57.50 per metre for stainless teflon lines which was what was recommended for turbo return lines. I will go and check it out and check that the clamps will work and if so grab them then

    Thanks
