Indeed, and the MPH doesn't change a huge deal. At the last time at the drags, my 60ft times and ET varied wildly, but my MPH had a spread of like 1.5MPH.

Alright we'll get back on topic

From what I've been reading (and I've been doing a lot of it for the past couple hours) the 5MTE is possible and not gonna cost me an arm and a leg.

    I will need:
    MTEU Manifold
    MTEU Dizzy
MTEU Turbo (or T03 from VL commo?)
    Exhaust and sump gaskets

Now I will also need oil feed and drain lines made up. Oil feed can come from simply putting a t-piece where the oil pressure switch is and oil drain line will need a connector welded into the sump. So here comes the main question, does the engine have to be moved/raised to remove the sump or can it just be unbolted and drop down to do the work on it?

EDIT: This looks like it should be good for the oil lines etc

Im not 100% on the sump so I wont comment, but how much do you really think these items will cost you. Im willing to bet it will be very close to the cost of a 7m.

I can get the manifold and dizzy for ~$50, turbo I'm not sure but VL commo ones can go for ~$150? Gaskets aren't too much and I might need some exhaust and manifold modification for a couple hundred bucks.

7MGE is a lot of work to swap an engine over. A lot more than just adding a turbo. I know the engine will need to be dyno tuned after and other things changed and I've also accounted for that.

I can't specifically comment on what is required to drop the sump alone out of an MA61, but before you do, I suggest you map out where the oil drain is going to go. Last thing you want to do is have it directly underneath an engine mount or somewhere completely inaccessible.

If you really are going ahead with this then I suggest you do get a VL turbo. You may need to turn the front cover to work better with the 5M intake.

Also check the MTEU exhaust manifold for cracks - they are very prone to doing this. Get any cracks welded before you get going. Also check the exhaust manifold mating surfaces for flatness, usually they are bent like a banana (not that I have seen one of those a year).

Thanks very much for the pointers and advice. I think if I can 100% stick to a cheap budget then I will be able to get this done and make it 'worthwhile'

Sure go ahead and play - you will learn heaps. When it blows its head gasket, stop.

    Buy a 1UZ.

    Fit it.

    Enjoy real power.

You know it Hopefully I will be able to run this setup successfully for a year tops at low boost. Give me plenty of time for saving for v8 powah. But if it blows the head a lot sooner than expected then it'll be time to buy a cheap runabout and begin the project early or do a weekend swap for a 5MGE with some beer and mates to get it up and running again

Also budget for a NEW HEAD GASKET! Fit it before you start on the turbo and crunch the bolts down another 10ft/lb over stock.

Mine was run in it's first incarnation for 12 months as a daily driver with 10psi.

With the MTEU Airesearch M10 turbo it boosted instantly/had great response (made lout whooshing sound too.)

At 10psi, it made 130rwkw-not stacks, but still was still respectable 11 years ago.

I'd be running it at maybe 6-7 psi and I have also budgeted for a HG if need be. My car has done under 200,000k so I hope it doesn't have an issue just yet. 130rwkw would be more than enough for me, would be nice if I can make 110-115. And the fact it lasted you 12 months makes me happy

Yep-dizzy was the MTEU one with the std ignition system, and ECU was a Haltech F7 MAP unit.

I don't have the graph anymore unfortunately.

    Injectors were modified VR commodore.

Ah, the memories, but, oh, the nightmares.................

Haha yeah, so aftermarket ECU to fuel it and bigger injectors!

Still sounds like it was a good thing, esp for back then!

I think GT's description of it as the 'Crown of Fury' tells something of the experience it inflicted on Sean (as well as the engine's performance)?
