    Default classified viewing for guests

    hey all,

i know this question has been asked before, like most i ask, but is it possible to show someone not related to toymods to view a thread, say for arguments sake, the classified section?

just wanted to show my lil bro a celica for sale, but i ahve to copy and paste the details elsewhere 'cause he won't sign up, also had the same problem when i'm trying to show other people, couldn't figure out why until i logged out to find the link myself, but i just shows empty threads.. not alot of fun...

go easy on the 'shoulda searched first' comments, i'm new here... havne't got my license on the search tool yet

This question hasn't been asked before because turning off viewing of the classifieds was only a recent development.

If you view the main forum page without being logged in, this is what the board, as representatives of the financial members, see as the focus of the forum.

The sections we've shown indicate the kind of person we are trying to attract. If a person who's thinking about joining is interested in the sections we haven't shown only, then quite simply we'd rather they go elsewhere.

So basically, the answer to your question is no. You'll either have to continue what you're doing, or convince these people to sign up.

what about a 'read-only' type of thing... IMO if a toymodder wants to sell something, then they're rarely to discriminate whether it goes to a toymodder or not, and if so, they can then choose at their own disgression. i understand that a guest may only be interested in something 1 in 1000 times, but it's a little frustrating...

i kind of agree here also with being allowed to show outsiders something.

i tried to link a mate to my members rides buildup thread and they were not able to view it because they are not a toymods member.

i didnt now know this and have now realised that a lot of the people who have hleped me out with parts and stuff i have sent them the link to my rides thread and they will not be able to view it.

i would like people who are not toymods forums members (and never will be, all they want to see is my car and maybe if they see it they will be interested engough to join the forums) to see my car and yeh people who i know that have toyotas just for a daily driver maybe they need parts and stuff i would like to be able to refer them to the classifieds and tech section also.

can a sticky or something be made up for people like me who are permanently looged on so we know what sections of the forums outsiders can and canot see so i dont waste my time sending them links.

i dont really agree here becuase as wagonist said we are trying to attract a certain type of user and the benifits of signing up are seeing the classifieds etc..etc. and the benifits of being a financial member are not having to worry about rep etc..etc..

    my 2 cents

If we allow non-signed people to view forum member cars it can increase the risk of that car going missing. However if they were members it would be a little bit easier to track whats happening.
That only if it was possible to provide evidence that toymods was used to view that car.

dude... don't get me wrong but if i show a photo of my car, how on earth does that give enough info for someone to take it? i'd have to say "hey, this is my car, it's usually parked on the cnr of joe and smith street after hrs, otherwise come to my work at joe smiths fish and chip shop..." increase the risk? i don't think so tim...

imageshack, flickr, etc are the place to put pictures to share

With Flickr you can put up enough description and metatags to mirror any specs listed in your advert.

    cheers,
    Charles.

I dont know but thievies are some of the smartest people but they use it for wrong instead of good. They could read your right up and slowly get information on it. Look at stitt's car. Surely no-one knew that the was a turboed motor in the wagon from looking outside but when they went to take a car from the carpark they knew exactly which one to take.

    My opinion;

Non-members should be able to view the classifieds but not post in them (like ausrotary i believe). This way toymodders are selling to a wider audience, and are therefore going to be more likely to sell their goods quicker/at a higher price.

Also, the classifieds can serve as a point of first contact for non-members who do not have the knowledge to contribute to the technical sections. I remember that before i was a member and before i had my TA22 i would often check toymods for one. Then once i bought one i signed up. I am now constantly learning and trying my bet to contribute back.

cuzzo - sure the mods will give people an idea as to WHAT they're stealing... but not WHERE to find it.. that's upto the info listed... what makes you think that who ever stole the stits wagon looked on toymods for car shopping? and theives aren't necessarily smart.. hence bricks through windows, screwdrivers in locks, and burnt out wrecks... a SMART theif does NOT steal a VL commodore, or corolla, then dump it... a smart theif steals a BMW, and re-births it.

    kugz - exactly my point

In my opinion all the classifieds and rides sections should not be open to non-forum members, which the exception of the cars for sale section.

If someone is looking for parts, then they probably have a Toyota, and thus should join up.
If someone is looking for a new car, then they may not have a Toyota, and thus may not have a desire to join up unless they purchase a Toyota.

i dunno... i'll half agree on that one 'cause i can't decide whether i'd be more inclined to buy then join, or join then buy... what if you were to have the FIRST post only available to non-members, as a little "demo" if they wanna find out more, they join...

on the old forums i know the referrals worked with extra numbers in the adress, is it possible to implement something so that if a member gives the link to someone else it has that members number or something so the non member can still view it, and is traceable back to the member should anything go bad?
