Thanks heaps guys, big help. Sorry for the n00b questions, guys. I really dont know much about diffs and am trying to learn!
Besides the ratios, is there any other difference between the 1030 and 1031 series?
How would I be able to tell the the diff I'm looking at has an LSD? Or would it need to be taked apart for this?

In the models you are looking at to fit a early celica, LSD was a limited option that was offered on the 242GT and is rarer than rocking horse shit. some of the later models had LSD'S but they won't be the right width for your sillycar and I don't think you can change centres but I could be wrong, check with a diff pro.
    cheers greg.

easy way to pick difference of 1030 to 1031 is the size of it.. 1031 is bigger and has more metal on it

Have a look at these two for info on the 1030 and 1031 differences and identifying them:

    http://www.davebarton.com/volvorearends.html
    http://people.physics.anu.edu.au/~am...volvo_dana.htm

Eaton make a TruTrac center (and a few others I think) for this diff (dana30), I got one on ebay, think the user was 'Rons Machining Shop'. However I have a vague memory of recently seeing an ad in a hotrod mag here selling all Eaton TruTracs a lot cheaper than I got mine *face palm*. I'm pretty sure you needa know which version of the diff you have too cos I *think* there can be fitting issues if you get the lsd center for the 1030 and try put it in the 1031 (and vice versa).

Idk if it will help but I used a 1031 3.73:1 with the 912A588 Trutrac.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Quaife do a LSD for the volvo diff.. not a clutch style one but which most people want but for some reason. But expect to pay a small fortune as quaife is a one of the biggest name brands in LSDs a lot of companys use them OEM for performance cars. Comes with lifetime warranty to

Don't forget they are a dana 30 diff - which is the same as the front of a jeep - so most style centres are available aftermarket.
Heaps of us have the detroit true trac in our volvo diffs, you can also get spools air lockers etc.... There just isnt much of a factory option.

well.... i finally got my arse into gear and installed the ovlov diff last weekend.
After going through the install process, i noticed a particular issue to take notice of when getting the diff welded up for toyotas

Where the handbrake cable attaches on the original diff, there are two brakety bits - one where a little tag bolts to, and another where a cable protecty tube slides through..... well, i found out that you only need to get the one that the cable tag bolts to welded back on - the other one hits on the lower trailing arm if you leave it there (i had to cut it off with an angle grinder!)

I had some custom cables made up for mine, toyota one end volvo the other. I think cost around $150, a place called flexible drive systems here in Adelaide, but they sent it to vic for the required swaging.
And deleted the middle bracket like teh Witzl there.

yep ill be getting custom handbrake cables made up... somewhere. I believe there is a place in southwest sydney that does them, but i'll work on that after i get the bloody car running.

    Onto my next question.
How the fark do you install the inner axle seal, without buying a custom tool from volvo?
The axle bearing is a greased item, and as such has axle seals either side to keep diff oil out and grease in. The inner seal sits about 1.5-2 inches inside the axle tube, and mine are flogged, so i have replacements. You can almost see the inner seal in the pic i posted above.
I've read the volvo diff service manual... and of course it says to use "special tool" 5009 + 1801 (drift, installing drive shaft inner seal)

The outer seal seems a lot easier - it gets installed as you tighten up the plate that holds the axle into the tube.

    Any ideas/suggestions?
I measured this inner seal, and it's 65mm diameter.... so i was thinking of getting some cylindrical device of around 62-64mm diameter to bash this seal into place.

Wow, nice job so far! I had both the spring and panhard mounts swapped over.
