1st GEN Celica Surge Tank Ideas

yesterday i was given a alloy tank that was fabbed up for a VW but didnt fit, (as 4mm to tall)
Needs foam but looks the go, its abit wide so i will cut the side out of it and weld a new one on,

bottom has a valleyed sump + foam filled so shouldnt struggle with fuel surge.
Im just hoping that its wont be seen from outside the car, hopefully just a little to tickle peoples intrest but not be a fullsick drop tank

People might consider going a plastic drag tank, my tank is rusted so need repair, but the drag tanks go for 300ish for a big tank with mounting brakets, and should be pretty good on fuel surge untill you get right down

this is the surge setup im using in my '22



cant say anything bout the smell cause the car has never been started LOL

but its all braided 5/16 lines, 2ltr surge tank, VL pump, pierburg lift pump and your normal filters where needed... all i need now is to get the stock fuel lines remade in 5/16 size

I've had to abuse my wheel well to get the thing to fit, theres 3 protrusions which sit about an inch to high, although none of these protrusions do anything. They're there for expantion. so My assumption is that the protrusions could be removed however you want and you'd be left with a flat tank. My only other issue is how close the rear of the tank looks to the back of the car. It sits in the exact same spot as the stock tank but doesn't tapper down like the stock tank. I'll upload the pics tonight.

the other option is to use the civic pot and pump and place it in the celica tank, I honestly thing that would be a winning solution. I'll post pics of the pump and inside the tank.

well I got my intank pump from the states yesterday and it dont fit the ra28, it has a cosiderably larger plate that it bolts to and is also around 25mm deeper.
so unless I modify the spare tank I have it wont be usefull. So plan "A" is finished and onto plan "B". If I am going to cut the tank to fit this pump I might as well as see what other intank pumps will go close.

considering 28's are wat 50ltr i dont mind losing 5-10 for an intank setup.

im also looking at infotechs thread in conversions... interesting adaption of a VL setup.

The Civic tank will be 45 litres, same as my daily driver (1993 EG).

Thanks TA-022, I think the setup I have fabricated is workable but we won't know till I fire it up for the first time. I'll keep you all posted.

well the civic tank is looking too tight, its doable but not enough margins. I've lost too much boot and it looks a little ugly as it sits out the bottom. Now the good news is that civic pump is smaller than the stock RA28 tank, as in depth wise, so I'll be hacking the civic tank to bits putting in the stock baffeling from the civic tank and welding in the civic pump. I've just gotta check with my mate to see if he can do it. My biggest issue is now I have to rebuild my boot, after having cut up all the rust repair I had done.
I dont know how this new idea sits with everyone else, but I guess it'll be a lot easier than other ideas?

Before welding mine i filled it up with soapy water a few times over a week.
Seemed to do the job of removing any fuel vapors.

Get a barbeque lighter and burn out any vapours... simple. They also make a nice bang when you get a stoichiometric mix. Blowing with compressed air will help speed up the process.
