Default 1st GEN Celica Surge Tank Ideas

Alot of talk happening in a few threads about mountings of surge tanks in 1st GEN celicas.

Thought I'd start this topic here to get some greater audience input.

As talked about everyone seems to be looking for an ideal location outside of the
cars interior to avoid that nasty fuel smell in the cabin.

I'll kick things off by posting Toy77's setup from another thread .. as its the same method I
plan to use in my 1GGTE RA28. Relocate the muffler (in the idea of dump tip behind rear
wheel) and then using the stock muffler location to house the pumps and surge tank.

fwiw, this is how i did my RA40 (which being a hatchback has similar problems as per RA28) without a surge tank.
-EFI pumps draws from the tank thru the largest carbi filter i could find and fit
-EFI pump is mounted as low as possible
-EFI filter is mounted up in engine bay
the zip ties around EFI pump are ghetto-spec

The EFI pump is mounted between the tank and the diff and is partly protected by the mount for the horizontal control am (name escapes me at moment)

now that i know this works, i'll replace the zip-ties with proper brackets and put some flexible stone guard ahead of the hardware to minimise damage

Thats how i've had the AE86 for years now.. Only get surge problems when under 1/4 of a tank.. But i'd still feel safer having a surge tank.

This is what i have in the AE86, which again is similar to the RA28.

Im convinced that with some better sealant (i have a 0.8mm sheet alloy lid on it) it wouldnt leak into the cabin at all. I coudl always assist the venting process by opening that plug by my EFI pump and adding a 60mm fan to expel the air from there. Currently (without a good seal) im getting some slight smell, but only when its been sitting for a while.

For my RA23 I am going to cut a sump/swirl into bottom of the fuel tank to the full depth of boot compartment and run high pressure pump suction and return lines into that.

That way will not need low pressure pump or lines etc, will mount filter and pump under car.
Hopefully by not having high pressure lines in car will not get the dreaded fuel smell.

    regards

I believe that it is fine for road going cars, so long as there is a flame proof bulkhead in between. Check with your state reg authorities on that one, but from memory Justen runs a similar system and his is road reg (as is mine).

im thinking more about spare wheel location after using the well for pumps etc.

mounting there i have no problems with ... its the lack of spare wheel that will fail pink slip here.

Mine is very similar in setup and uses the same location as Takai.

I did have the whole system in one side of the boot but the smell of fuel that would occur after having the car locked up really annoyed me (no lines or connections leaked it was simply the rubber fuel hose ). It also took up a lot of boot space. So given that my car has a spare wheel well designed for a 12" wheel i.e. no use to me. I changed my setup.

Filters, pumps, surge tank and associated lines all moved to the boot.

All lines and wiring enter/exit through the wall of the wheel well.

I made a "lid" from sheet aluminium and used a long section of 3mm vaccuum hose joined at both ends as an "o-ring" to seal the sheet aluminium lid to the floor of the boot.

Two vents were fitted to the wheel well to vent the chamber to atmosphere.

First time my car has been 100% fuel odour free in 7 years It's also a fair bit quieter too (fuel pump noise).

... its the lack of spare wheel that will fail pink slip here.
I just carry "flat in a can". Many new cars only have this.

For the guys running the tanks in the wheel well, I imagine they can only be 6" tall or so? So not a lot of volume?

Ill go measure mine soon and get an accurate figure, but its by no means tiny.
As for a seal the other option i was thinking about was strips of rubber glued to either the lid or the boot floor, although the 3mm vac hose idea sound tops.
