Default I dun know which oil to use 18r-geu argh !

Howdy people well i've just changed my oil from 15W-50 to 20W-50 because my gauge didn't read any pressure. But I still don't have any pressure at ALL. So now i'm sure that my sender is stuffed.

I've started my car three times and third time a small puff of white smoke came out the exhaust which it hasn't done before (20W50). Now I've been told to use 15W-50 but i don't know what the condition of my engine which sucks. When i start the car the car rattles for about 3 seonds which ain't good.

But i need to know what oil would be the best of using without knowing the condition of my engine. I also need to know where my oil pressure sensor is because i need to change it or make sure it's on properly.

    Thanks

    Hi,

20W-50 mineral-based oil is fine for these engines.

The oil pressure sensor is under the induction system (that is, laft had side when standing at front of car and facing engine). just forward of the oil filter. It's a small plug thing with a wire that attaches to it.

If you haven't got one, get a genuine Toyota oil filter. They get up to pressure quicker than the non-genuine items.

Check the wire to the sensor in case the connector has slipped off. The actual sender unit is pretty robust. They can still be purchased from Toyota. Also, it could be the gauge that is stuffed... but this is pretty rare.

    Oils aint oils.
Spend the money and ALWAYS buy good oil.
If you just putt around Penrite HPR30 or if you like to drive it hard HPR50.
Always warm it up in the morning especially if running 50 grade.
Ive been racing 18R's for three years never a prob and they look like new when pulled down for freshen up.

i'd suggest you get another sensor off an engine from same kind of chassis/dash as yours - variable guage and idiot-light sensors are internaly different.

Before choosing which oil to use, you should (as a matter of great urgency) work out if you do have enough oil pressure to actually run the engine.

notte: startup rattle is probably timing chain.

    Jackel,
Dont stress too much.....most ohc engines (with a few k's on them ) rattle at start up when the timing chain gets a bit streched...until the oil pressure builds up enough to push the timing chain tensioner out...Personally i think its good that your engine rattles for 3 sec's>>>and then goes quiet....that means you have oil pressure.. Sure a puff of smoke at start probably means your valve stem seals are on the way out.....no real concern until you need to top up your oil every week...

With regards to the 15w or 20w50 oil .........viscosity is a science within it's self........... use what ever the book says..... That being said, change your oil often....as the polymeres that affect the viscosity change with heat and age...they eventually break down.

If you are unsure if you gauge/oil light is working........simply turn on your ignition....earth the wire that goes to your sender/switch...gauge should go to max or the light should come on...

    phew...................leso

i've only ever used genuine toyota filters $22 bucks a pop argh !

The engine doesn't use one bit of oil or coolant so thats a relief.

The oil pressure dissappeared the first time i ever changed to oil (which was 15W-50) and never came back.

i've looked around at the wiring is the sender above the dissy or the one thats connected to where the oil filter goes?

    thanks everyone

To true about chains and guides, if there was no pressure it would rattle its guts out, then stop....
    but
The book was written for a new engine with pre set tolerences not taking 200+K's into account and was written with no knowledge of new oil technologys.
