    Default Time for that conversion?

    Hey guys,
After a couple of months on the weekend I got my Corona XT130 started and running again. So that was going to serve me as a daily until a mate said open the oil cap and see if there's air blowing out the top. There was lots of air, and I'm told this is not good. So what does the air mean exactly and is it time to be thinking of doing the conversion sooner than planned?
    Cheers

the air is called blow-by and it's an indicator of a worn engine usually. I've been told that if you hold the cap over the top of the oil filler hole, and the cap gets sucked back onto the hole then it's supposed to be not that bad, but I don't know.

It's looking pretty horrible at the moment, I'm at the point of deciding whether I really want to resurrect the car or just run it into the ground. If I do resurrect it I have to decide on an engine, the general opinion at the moment is the 1g, any other opinions keeping in mind it's meant to be a daily?

    blow-by.

It means you have worn piston rings and your crankase is becoming pressurized by the combustion process. The cylinder presssure is escaping past the rings into your crankcase.

Burning oil is also a symptom. Most of the time tho oil usage is valve guides or seals tho.

Engine will still last a while (most circumstances). But may be wise to use thicker engine oil.

If you want to use it as a daily just make sure that it has plenty of oil, It will probably use a fair bit.

As long as it runs and is capable of getting the car moving at a decent speed I wouldnt be overly concerned. The death of a toyota engine from wear can take a decade or more.

If and when the engine finally goes pop weigh up your options about what to do with the car. Unless it's in particularly good condition body wise it probably isnt worth fixing.

JB, i'd strongly reccomend that you read this thread and the link thats in that thread.

Blowby is not always a bad thing. If an engine couldn't 'blow-by' it would blow seals and other things. Anyways, read that thread, all is not lost and install an oil pressure guage to keep an eye on things.

XT130? 1X? Not even a Toyota engine, and doesn't deserve to be shown any respect.
    1. Remove 1X
    2. Remove rods from 1X, and sell to some poor sod rebuilding his 202
    3. Install any other engine
    4. Enjoy that your several-hundred $ wrecker engine makes a little over twice the power of the dude with the 202 that spent roughly 10 times as much

Yeah I concur, my 3S-GE is currently going through oil at an alarming rate, so I switched to thicker... and while it's not burning as much, it's still delaying the inevitable. I just don't wanna spin a bearing on a long trip like I just had.

If your not going to sell it drive it till the engine dies. Then you can make the decision if you want to put in a normal engine and continue driving it or go for a conversion.

No need to pull out and worry about a engine that is still running.

    umm.. test the compression first.
sometimes what looks like lots of air might just be reverberation or whatever... ie not actually a huge amount of air leaving the block.

drive it till it breaks, install toyota engine...

Thanks guys, for the time being I'll get that compression test done, and start using thicker engine oil, and I'm still undecided if the corona is the car that I really want to put all the effort into, heaps of time yet hopefully.
    Cheers

jb: if you dont have a compression tester you can borrow mine when i come that way for bathurst, but i wouldnt spend a penny on the old xt130. run it till it breaks and if it does then dont worry about conversions. goto the wreckers and getyoursef another starfire/shitfire engine for a slab of beer and repeat. ill even help you put it in.
