Special Piston Services make 18RG pistons also, the set I purchased was around the $1100 mark for forgies custom made to the size & c/r I wanted.

surely jetstar tickets are more than that?

that crank is about AUD$1200. divide yen by about 85ish. then add $200-300 for shipping

as for crap fuel, i had 10.5:1 in a 4K with warm cam. with 18RG, being hemi, you should still be able to go to between 10 and 11:1, and if worrried, dial in a bit more overlap to reduce dynamic compression.

arguably, the fuel we have nowadays is actually better than in recent years. leaded was never 98 was it?

ninja edit: you need a new engineer

actually, before you edited, it sounded like you did buy from someone on here...

you sound like you are having some issues.

i would suggest the tech section is not the place to vent your feelings.

adelaide engines? i just looked on google. you need to contact the original poster in that thread and ask if it is still avaiable. you might need to join that forum to do so. be aware it is a racing forum tho (IPRA)

So whats MAX bore size for an 18R realistically? And how do you work out how to hold down the c/ratio given our crap fuel these days?

I think it was in the tractor engine thread but I did see a link somewhere for a set of 9.7 pistons avalible new from japan from memory.

Also max bore size is about 92ish mm according to some people.

Tried adding an octane bosster to the fuel?

Why not run electric dizzy instead of points?

the other way to think abotu it is... if you have been in the hobby for 30 years, it should be pretty hard to scam you, as you would know what to check beforehand.

if you are pinging on 98 octane with only 9.7, then you have too much timing, or not enough fuel.
if you are running normal unleaded you should be slapped for thinking it would not ping
if you are running "premium unleaded", ie 95 octane, then you need to tune for it.

Stanvac hasnt been in operation for several years now. If your fuel is that old no wonder it pings!

    Hi,

My 9.7 18R-G doesn't ping on 98RON, but it will on 95 and it gets decidely unhappy on normal ULP.

If it's still pinging with 98RON (I use BP Ultimate which for my engine works the best) then you need to get your motor tuned.

    gee you're a funny bloke

seems that indeed Stanvac is closed as a refinery.

perhaps retard your timing and richen the mixture a bit to increase detonation resistance.

    ie, get it tuned.

THE PORT Stanvac refinery site will sit unused for at least another three years, while the southern suburbs battle to deal with a major shortage of industrial land.
Deputy Premier Kevin Foley announced yesterday that remediation of the site - some of which is already under way - will continue, focusing on the foreshore and wharf areas.
But a decision on whether to permanently close the refinery and unlock the land for industrial use, or to reopen the refinery, is still three years away.
The original agreement, signed in 2003 when Mobil mothballed the site at a cost of $30 million, did allow for the mothballed status to continue until 2009.
The company then has another 10 years, until 2019, to demolish the plant and clean up
i wonder what you saw then?

if that was my engine i'd be getting it honed, a set of rings, rod bearings, timing chains, and a gasket kit. For about $400 (or less) you'd have a nice reliable running 18rg. The problem with the world today is no one can rest easy unless everything is brand new. What happened to pulling out the service book and checking to see what was in spec or not before replacing??
even a bit of common sense!!
