Default 4age oil choices? Experiences pls.

    Hey all,

It's time for an oil change for my 4age 100kw. I remember reading somewhere that they really benefit from a high quality synthetic oil. I have a smidge over 240k kms.

I am not really up to speed on oil technologies, so any suggestions as to which brands work better than others would be great.

    Cheers!

    Chris.

Personally, Im planning to run shell helix ultra 5W-40W.

Its a bigport, but no efi anymore, all 42dcoe's, High comp pistons, balanced, port+polish etc.

However, this car isnt going to see much street use whatsoever. The ultra is probably a little bit to thin to be running on a streetable 4A.

Throw in some info guys, id like to see some suggestions on this one!

I used to run Penrite HPR30.

Although a mineral based oil it seemed to do ok and I only changed it every 10-12 thousand kms.

After having problems with cold starts on thicker oil recently I'm back to shell 15-50.
My bottom end has done 230k's & on long trips I've seen oil usage increase.
I'll give it some time & see how it goes but I've seen a 10-60 that i might give a try if its too much of a problem.

I used Mobil 1 5w-50 for 5 years in my 4AGE 100kw in my SX Seca. I changed it every 5-10,000 kms always changing the filter. Started doing this when I bought it ( had 130,000kms on it) and 140,000 kms later when my sister drove it with a stuck thermostat, I took the head off and the bores still had the original hone marks. I thought that was pretty good on a motor with 270,000kms on it.

Also note that most "Synthetic" oils are not synthetic anymore, they are mineral oils that have been hydrocracked so they have similar properties to PAO (polyalphaolefin) synthetic oils. Apparently Mobil 1 and Amsoil are some of the only true PAO synthetics left.

Bought my AE92 with 110 on the clock at which point i put a nulon engine treatment in along with Magnatec 10w/40. It now has 195 on the clock and has run perfectly ever since.

wow, that's some killer oil...85,000km to a service!

    hehe

I run BelRay 10/40 semi-synth, or I did, and now I'm on a fully synth BelRay. It's a GENUINE synthetic, too Not cheap though, but it helps working next door to the warehouse I've been changing at 10 000km in the GZE, and it was still clean at 5 (after the first couple of oil changes to clean the crud out)

Damned Castrol confusing the issue with their hydrocracking confusion... the reason for the whole "real" vs "fake" synthetic issue is because Castrol was able to hydrocrack a dino base stock so much that it actually passed the requirements for API's group 4 base stock which at the time was simply based on sulphur content etc.

I doubt hydrocracked oil is much of an issue anymore as most hydrocracked oils these days will be used in a synthetic "blend" (aka semi synth) if at all and almost definately will not end up in most companies full synthetic oils.

After all that crap API revised the standard to show group 4 and 5 as synthetic oils which kicked the hydrocracked oils back into group 3.

    E.1.3 BASE STOCK CATEGORIES
All base stocks are divided into five general categories:
    a. Group I base stocks contain less than 90 percent saturates and/or greater than 0.03 percent sulfur and have a viscosity index greater than or equal to 80 and less than 120 using the test methods specified in Table E-1.

    b. Group II base stocks contain greater than or equal to 90 percent saturates and less than or equal to 0.03 percent sulfur and have a viscosity index greater than or equal to 80 and less than 120 using the test methods specified in Table E-1.

    c. Group III base stocks contain greater than or equal to 90 percent saturates and less than or equal to 0.03 percent sulfur and have a viscosity index greater than or equal to 120 using the test methods specified in Table E-1.

    d. Group IV base stocks are polyalphaolefins (PAO).

    e. Group V base stocks include all other base stocks not included in Group I, II, III, or IV.
i.e. Polyolester, Polyalkylene Glycols (PAG), and perfluoropolyalkylethers (PFPAE)

i think if you go to your local auto store and have a look what they have decide from there.

on my 4age i used to use a 20W-50, but when i tried someting differant i noticed it.

i went to a 10W-40 and the engine just reved soo much nicer and smoother, even startup was fine.

everyone is gonna have their own opinion on what oil you should use, so decide for yourself, i'll just say, in most 4age's a 10W when newer is good, probably when older like yours a 15W, but i reckon a 40 would be your best bet. maybe even 50 depending upon your motor (it may not like 40 depending how its been treated its life) any semi synth should do the trick.

but be warned, a motor of that age. depending upon the oil it has recently used, if it has not used synth oil and you start using it, you could possibly develop oil leaks. depending on the seals it could have crap sitting around the seal/askets blocking any leakages, when you change to a synth oil it usually picks up this crap and can begin to leak in some case, depending upon how recent the seals/gaskets are etc.
