Loftus's car is the benchmark. It is fast, damn fast. But its by no means implausable that you or I or many people could build the same engine. It wasnt revealed to them by watery tarts slinging scimitars, or divine beings giving out special goggles and golden plates.
I think with a bit of research, planning and testing you could get a car to be close to if not as fast as Loftus's. The big problem i think is with the flycutting of the 20v valves into the pistons. The Loftus engine runs a 1.9L stroked/bored block with custom pistons rods and the 7A crank.

Is there ever a situation where a Monty Python qoute won't fit?You got a couple mixed up though:
"Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you."
"Oh but if I went 'round sayin' I was Emperor, just because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away."
Along the same vein, and just 'cause I like it:
"Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony."
Back on topic:
I've been playing with 4AG and 7AG in EAP today and I'm beginning to think it's not worth the effort for the power I'm looking for. Over 200-220hp or so, it's definately worth a shot, but for around 200hp, the power curve just winds up looking like a 4AG with a narrower rev range. (see attached chart).
Yeah, i realised when i re-read it that i had screwed up the quote. I blame being up till 2am yapping with the Perth guys.
Pity about the EAP representation. Would have been interesting to see what you would make.

In case this ever turns up in a search, mine is a fairly specific case, I'm not really after a practical car here. For a daily, I'd definately give a 7AG a try.Originally Posted by Ben Wilson

Not having a 7age to check but does this help?

"the deck height has been raised 15.4mm to accomidate the stroke." (which im sure you know)
Does this make it as simple as it being 15 mm higher? Im sure that some one can put a tape mesure up against a 7age and check, but a thought all the same.
That site doesn't happen to have 7A conrod dimensions anywhere does it? Could prove quite handyOriginally Posted by bobob

Yeah, im guessing about 20-25mm taller overall with the different sump etc.

Whilst technically making the whole engine taller, since the sump is below the engine mounts (and assuming you keep the standard A-series mounts) wouldn't this NOT affect the "height" (ie for bonnet clearances) of the engine?. Unless it also brings up crossmember clearance issues, the extra sump depth (7A is a 2-piece sump) shouldn't be an issueOriginally Posted by takai
