    Question Resealing a sump

    Hi All,

I need to reseal the sump on "old faithful" (SV21 Camry, 3S-FE).

Does anyone know the correct sealant that needs to be used on these?

I asked at the local Auto Shop, however the guy had this "I don't know what I'm talking about" look on his face, which didn't exactly thrill me....and I'd hate to do it and have it leak again.

    Appreciate any help,

    Cheers,

    Andrew.

if rubber, usually a sealant is not needed, except at corners where there is a joining metal piece (ie timing cover etc). a thin smear of silicon (black oil resistant) can be used,

BUT if you overtighten when the silicon is not cured, you can actualyl split the rubber and it will be stuffed.

put on smear of silicon, tighten up to contact and maybe a _fraction_ more, then wait a day or two for the silicon to cure, then tighten to spec.

Thanks for that, now I know what to ask for.

F.Y.I. The camry does just have silicone, there is no actual gasket.

    Cheers.

Yeah I've that stuff too, pretty much the same as V V V

Loctite Hi-Temp red silicon is good stuff, just make sure both surfaces are oil free.

Yeah the 3S-FE uses no gasket for the sump, and I think that goes for the whole line of 3S engines. My old 3S-GTE didn't have one either, and all I sealed it up with was the Toyota factory black goo which works a treat.

edit: actually there's a few different types of Toyota goo which you can get, I know there's the Toyota Red (for gearbox applications) and the Toyota green as well (for coolant / water-based applications).
