Default legalities of modifying the steering column

I'm interested in lenghting the steering column in my RA28, not by alot, maybe a coupld of inches. Possibly even making a spacer under the s/wheel.

Can anyone tell me why I should not do this or if it is / isn't legal?

I can tell you that if you modify the column in anyway, they will take that column and force it into your rear passage.
I cant remember what year exactly but a long time ago they introduced columns that collapse and if you change this, when you crash, you die!

The best you can do is lower the angle of the column, use a large(custom?) boss kit and wheel with mega offset.

It was certainly pre-1983 that they changed the ADRs. Anyway, the best thing to do is to get an extension to the boss kit housing. Something along the lines of what T3 sells here:http://www.technotoytuning.com/t3_si...extension.html

I had to get mine lengthened... involved cutting the end off an ae92 column and welding the end of an ae86 one on..
For it to be legal I was told the weld would have to be xrayed... which would cost alot.
So anyway I got it done illegally

Isn't that what killed Ayrton Senna?
    Well, apart from the tyre.

Nope, ground effects, debris on the track, and cold tyres killed Senna.
The steering column was still intact on impact, because he was able to countersteer just prior to running off the circuit.

Slightly off track but ground effects were not used for some years prior to Senna's death. The conclusions in the 1997 Italian Courts were that he was killed by the collapsing suspension flicking up and over into his forehead.

Cold rubber may have been a contribution to him initially loosing the car as stated by Takai

Yes, but when he lost the car it was a combination of cold rubber (i.e. reduced ride height), and a piece of debris on the road which the ground effects boards on the bottom of the car clipped. When they clipped the debris most of the grip was lost and hence the tail stepped out.
