Ok, fair enough...what can you recommend, preferably cheap (ish), strong, nice shift and capable of handling some power and torque?

One of the porsche transaxles! i can find out which model that friends have used on GT40's etc on monday. A hewland DGB would handle it ok if your didnt abuse the christ out of it as ive seen them handle 600+hp CHEVS in 1125kg for periods but they dont handle it well with that weight and that sort power with slicks very well, thats why we use the big VGC.
Second hand hewlands will cost more than One of the porsche transaxles but has advantages of weight, gearing choices, etc etc etc but wouldnt be my first choice as its a dogbox for mostly street driving.
The other one you could look at is Pontiac Fiero look here http://www.fierofocus.com/articles/a...o-history.html.

The Fiero uses a V6 in a spaceframe body with fibreglass panels and ive seen the whole cars for sale here for $12-14k, so the transaxle would be resonable price i would imagine. I no nothing about the boxes but there should be a fair bit on the net about them.

I always thought of making a car out of the Fiero with ditching or modding the fiberglass and improving the chassis and suspension setup, as it would making building a car a lot quicker than starting from scratch.

Hmmm, that's a reasonable call too...It'd sure speed up the process, but how good is the pontiac chassis? They don't have much of a reputation for cars which handle...on the other hand, if you could strip everything off it, and work from there, I guess anythings possible...

Some of the lambo/ferrari replica cars use the Fiero as the underlaying chassis/transaxle.

However, anything significantly more powerful that the Pontiac V6 gets a porsch or audi transxle.

The porsche box that is commonly used I believe is the G30. There is also a particular Audi box that's used in the gt40 replicas. If you want cheapish... don't consider a ZF! Dad bought a brand new one made by RGT in the US for 12k

hahaha its a take of, of a sport sedan but wouldnt be legal here! The main reason is you need the roof and pillars and door skins, which would set you back a full carbon body for a normal car
Besides the fact you couldnt have the wheel vent behind the front guards
    god it is sexy

My fav ferrari is the f40, the are a bit square but god there sensational to look at!
