I believe this is caused by a change in head gasket material properties and the torque required for the head bolts not being changed to reflect that. It is why people say to torque them so much higher than stock.

    80 ft/lb with moly
    120 with 30 weight oil.
Stock spec is 58 ft/lb for both GE and GTE (though i am unsure if the TSRM i have has been updated to reflect the higher torque required).

Heat cycles of an engine also wear away on their longevity ie making them brittle over time. Generally though they do last a fairly long time.

Actually cause by Ford not having a long enough expand on the bolts when they heat up.
AU head bolts tend to fix this issue.

what was the go with the cracking and warping then? - or was that resultant of the running out of water and cooking?

BHG drops water, head runs hot, crack or warps etc.

Cool, thanks for those answers, guys. My MS123 has its original 5M-E, 185K on the clock, has been regularly serviced, including cooling system, and is only run on premium unleaded.

Is this one any more likely to do a gasket than any other vehicle?
