i would ring haltech and ask them can it do a fully variable solenoid control
its not just on an off
it is a varying pulse width modulation which i know haltech cannot do so far

90% of ecus can only do on 100% and off which is vvt

That was my point, the Haltech cant cut it.

Does anyone know what the possibility would be of converting it to a VVT style of function at least until VVTi compatible stuff becomes affordable?

    Correction, run rough then.

Not wanting to get into details but yes the Haltech can control VVT-i on Toyotas.

My issue is that i'm trying to diagnos a possible faulty oil control solenoid without a manual or anyone else that has done it.

the oil solenoid has just an on and off trigger but the std ecu pulses it very fast i presume

i have seen from people asking me about things that alot fo tuners do not know how to tune these vvti with aftermarket ecus

and another thing is that engine oil presure can also determine on the position of the vvti cam gear

so its not just one thing to look at when adjusting them

just have a speak to your tuner and ask them if they understand everything they prob do but i do get calls regarding this sort fo thing

i have the vvti workshop manual but its in japanese

Thanks Sideshow, appreceate the info. I am aware of the oil pressure side of things, but my original question had nothing to do with the ecu rather i am trying to diagnos a possible faulty control solenoid. The thing is that adjusting the inlet cam timing through the Haltech worked at the very begining of the conversion and now doesn't respond.

Either way i'll buy the new solenoid and eliminate that as a problem and work my way forward.

Would you mind if i had a look at the VVTi manual?

This is funny. Ask a simple question, get a million and one retarded answers that go nowhere in regards to actually helping with the problem.

Having said that, Grant aka dori dori (wtf?) is equally retarded, so I'll re-ask his query for him.

We are trying to get his VVTi (constantly variable, not on/off) on his 2J working. I agree with you Jim that it's most likely a series of pulses rather than a flat voltage supply that the solenoid normally recieves, although varying in frequency for different cam timing positions (obviously).
The issue here is that we've triggered the solenoid with 12V with it out of the car, and witnessed it moving enough to do the job. When we refit it to the car and do the same, it should advance the cam timing and increase overlap etc with the result being either a rough idle, or a complete stall. This does not happen, even though we can hear the solenoid clicking away. Oil pressure is not an issue, so we need to know if there's anyone who has had enough EXPERIENCE with these motors to offer advice on something we may not have thought of.
The ECU is a Haltech E11 V2. It and the programmers are up to speed on the whole VVTi thing, so that's not really an issue. That side of things doesn't even come into it at this stage anyway, as we just want to be able to hear that the actuation of the solenoid is actually doing something (said rough idle etc) before going any further.

    Any HELP would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Jeremy.

P.S. As Grant said, do you reckon we could have a squizz at the manual Jim? I live in Baulkham HIlls so could pick it up or something off you (I'm pretty sure you live in the same area?)
We can translate it here at work.

So you have checked the oil solenoid and it apparently work, you say it has good oil pressure, you have hooked up powere and earth to solenoid with engine running and no change.
That only leaves then the actual actuator, have you give it a bit of pressure with compressed air regulated down to say 40psi to see if you are getting actual movement.

    regards

have you physically checked taht youve got free rotation of the camshaft within the vvti mechanism? ie nat gaulled with oil reside or something. if the solenoid is working, and oil pressure is up, it 'should' rotate...

    Cheers, Ed. Will do.

I'm thinking that although the solenoid worked out of the engine it might be failing once load it applied.

My old E6K can do a variable pulse width modulation with revs, it's used for boost control. Would that do the job?

If you want to check if the VVT is working, mark the pulley in the off position grab a timing light and trigger the VVT, the strobe effect of the timing light should make it simple to see if anything is happening.
