    Default Century transmission - A60?

OK, so a friend of mine just put a deposit down on a 1986 VG40 Century. It's extremely neat and tidy for a 20yo vehicle, drives smooth as silk, and above all looks more pimp than anything I've seen up close.

So now I'm trying to find as much info about this vehicle as I can. According to the build plate it has an A60 transmission, which is something I've never heard of. Has anyone else come across one before? And importantly, is it (as I suspect) a 3-speed? This is something we didn't notice on the brief test-drive around the suburbs.

Plans of future modifications have been discussed (eg strapping a couple of turbos to the 5V-EU) but this would probably require a new transmission, and preferably a 4-speed, but I've gotta figure out what (if anything) will bolt up to a V series block. Any info would be well appreciated, this isn't exactly a common car!

hm.. maybe a 1(3)UZ is on the cards just coz of the whole mechanical package and transmission.. plus there's a supercharger kit available for it.. and also it's a newer engine so parts are available..? .. well they're both V8s.. it's just me thinking out loud..

    any chance its this thing?

    http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...toyota+century

    following the trend of A30 being 3 speed and A40 being 4 speed..maybe an A60 has a conventional 3 speed with a reduction box (high and low) bolted in front? ie 1L, 2L, 3L, 1H, 2H, 3H?

what diff does it have? Fxx9?

    1986?
I'd almost put money on the fact that its a 4 speed.

But as crazy as Bretts idea is it does sound somewhat feasible.

The A650E is a newer version of the A350E (both 5 speeds)
So its possible that the A60 is just a better (read, more expensive) version of an A40 ?

Cressida's and Crown's of that year run the A43DE, which is almost identical to the A340E, so you'd hope the Century's it better than that ?

A60 is the manufacturing plant code. The axle code is directly above this on the plate. For example my MX83 has a plant code of A48 or something and my Hilux is A23.

I reckon that Norbie might be able to read the plate on the thing, he has read a few in his time!!! (would be quite funny if he stuffed it up tho )

Ahh, but the way his first post reads, he might be getting secondhand information.

Brett: nope, different car. Looks pretty much identical to that except it has dark metallic blue paint and a somewhat more subdued colour scheme in the interior.

Cruzida: interesting theories, you could be onto something there. I'll make a point of getting under the car and having a close look, it might look similar to something I've seen before. Interestingly it is a column-shift, not sure if that would make any difference to the transmission code though?

MacroP: I saw this car first-hand and read the build plate myself, yes it certainly is an A60 transmission code. I had my camera phone in my pocket the whole time but I didn't think to snap a photo of the build plate - d'oh!

Oh and the diff is a live-axle G series, no LSD. I can't recall what ratio but being a big lazy cruiser with no overdrive I assume it's pretty tall.

The car is being picked up in a week or two so I'll be sure to get plenty of pics.

Norbie.... i would probably throw out the idea of forced induction on the 5V, considering that it is a wet block and has weak cylinder strength. Just ask Jamie Herritage, he tried i believe.

i love the 1UZ idea though.
    ...... butt scratcher?!

Interesting, perhaps I should try to contact Jamie and pick his brain.

1UZ isn't a bad idea, especially considering Wilbo just bought a complete one for $500!

If you need a bellhousing for the V series motor, CRS can help (they made them for the W50).
You could probably sort out the migrating bore liner (and consequent BHG) issue by doweling them.
