Another option that hasn't been suggested is to use an I-pod with an external amp. Leave the original squawk box in the console looking very 70's and make a small docking station for your I-pod, or even run the headphone cable through your column where the horn button is and use velcro to stick the I-pod to the center of your original steering wheel.

There may even be a bluetooth option for an Ipod which would make it even easier but I am not "au fait" with the I-pod craze so someone else can figure that one out.

    Hi,

Crikey Witzl, your dash reminds me of old 70s porn-style with that thick carpet. Couldn't you get a smaller pile cloth!

Oh, and have you got fluffy dice also?

I think that Gold28 missed the point on not hacking the centre console... people DO pay handsomely for an unhacked console and it is financially silly to hack it. You are much better off making a new one, cause then you can make it wrap the handbrake etc aswell and put a console well in to store your CDs. Can make it look quite nice with previously suggested coverings. Also, a basic MDF/ply frame with fibreglass over then 5mm ish foam them covering will make for a rather nice console.

yes they were for me, and i did drink them well.

I chose the porn-style fuzz considering that this IS a 1977 vehicle, and i am the master of pimp...... plus the gearstick boot is done in the same material, and it suits the rest of the fleckstone and black dash colour scheme.

    ...... butt scratcher?!

    Hi

just thought i would tell you what i did with my ra23, unfortunatly i dont have any pictures but it turned out great and its simple.

with the actual mounting tabs you have to either bend them or cut them slightly for the unit to fit. I used a piece of scrap stainless about 1mm thick simply because thats what was lying around.

I made a "c" shape that went around the top of the unit and screwed in to the sides of the headunit. On the sides i bent out two tabs roughly 30 degrees on wither side to attach to the brackets on either side. i also bent up a tab on the top of the bracket to reach the two screws that attach the dash/console trim for extra support.

    for the trim:

Firstly get a hold of an spare radio surround to save hacking up your good one.

you have to cut out the rear demister and aricon/blank button spots unfortunatly in order for the headunit to fit.

go to your local lazer cutter and get a piece of alloy (i used dark brushed piece roughly 1mm thick) cut to fit inside the trapezoid perfectly with a radio cutout. For the demister i got them to cut out a "H" pattern in the bottom area, It doesnt fit in the original orientation so it has to sit on the side.

The height and the width of the "H" are the same as the demister switch size and when the metal is folded in the right way (time consuming) you can clip in the switch using the side pieces you folded as support. I ended up using a zip tie around the back (god bless zip ties ) to keep it from rattleing.

oh and make sure you measure the headunit bracket correctly so you can fit the trim ring on your stereo, I made mine too far in originaly and had to make another one.

Hope this helps it is the neatest and simplest solution i found to mount the headunit.

    Daniel.

EDIT: made a pic in paint

I think What I ment by not cutting it is I have only ever seen 2 Facias in their origonal condition. And I'm pretty sure there are more than 2 people that would be willing to pay for a good one.

Just read the Quote by River.. from 2006

"A plant is a living thing and just because it doesn't scream when hurt doesn't mean it's not murder. That is why vegans are gutless backsidewipers."

My wife is a Vegan, and I often have arguments with her about stuff like this. I laughed when i read it, Might be a few years old now, but i am new to this Forum.

There was a piece in the paper today about Waiting for Elective Surgery on the big waiting list, and someone mentioned that If we Humans made an animal suffer for years waiting for a fix for something it was suffering from, We would be put in Goal for it. Yet the Government makes us humans wait for years for necessary surgery.
I mentioned it to my wife today, and she said..."Yes but animals can't do anything about it for themselves...bla bla bla" I said that we humans can't either, that is why we depend on trained doctors, orthopaedic surgeons etc. to fix us. We are made to suffer on a 4 year waiting list of more. Lets stick the Government in Goal i say.
I guess they would reply with...lets put that poor bugger down!

    That's my 2 bobs worth.

    Better late than never....

And yet, it brought to my attention yet another very useful thread. I've also seen Witzl's blue/black fleck work relatively recently when his old car came up for sale. It still looks porny. But it is a neat fit.
