How strong is the r154 and is it going to hold when i head up to the track

Hey guys just about to head up to the track next week.

i have a 180sx with a 1jz fitted, it has a t60-1 and an r154 it makes around 340rwhp.

im heading up to the track next week i've got myself a set of micky thomson semi slicks.
i have an upgraded single plate clutch so it should slip.

Im just wondering whether the r154 is going to hold together with a few hard launches?

I think you should be right but i would be careful.

Apparentle the weak spot for these gearboxes is hard launches in first are not liked, relating back to a 1st gear thrust washer that can fail and make its way through the box consequently destroying it.

This washer can however be upgraded to stronger material and then i could confidently say that you would be safe and grinning!

well i was thinking instead of just dropping the clutch i might ride it a bit so the clutch takes quite a bit of the initial load when i take off... how hard is the washer to replace is it a box out kinda job?

box out and stripped.

the best way to launch isnt to dump the clutch anyways. to much wheel spin if you got the RPM up.

allow it to slip a little, it will give you a better launch i think you will find

Actually the washer usually fails on hard 1st->2nd shifts. And yes it's a strip-down-and-rebuild job to replace the washer.

yeh im not going to just drop the clutch probably slowly pull the clutch out at around 5500-6000rpm... this tread was on my mates car and he said they didn't even chirp when he launched at 6000rpm and he has same power so it will be interesting to see what kinda 60 foot i can get.

if my memory is correct they up grade them with a washer from a 4x4 cruiser.

just have a case hardened replica made. this is what i did and it cost me a grand total of $60. Once you fix this issue, the box is tough as nails. i Make a little less power than that, but am having no problems whatsoever.

Landcruiser one is actually the same part number. Good old 'Stenno' found this out.

I just had my gearbox apart and the rebuilder said all that was required is oil channels on the other side of the washer as well. (only on one side from factory).

So he machined in a few oil channels on a new washer.

The reason why R154's are broken is: strong unsprung single plate clutches, with no slip and sticky tyres with big launches.

Weakest component is the box in this situation.
