    grab this degree wheel
    http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1635
cut a hole in the middle just big enough for the output shaft to go through and mark a
tooth on the shaft with a paint pen and get that lined up with zero on the degree wheel.
put a mark on the input top center.

put gear box in 5th, turn the input one turn and the mark on the output should line up
fairly closely with 282 degrees (.783 if w58). I haven't tried it yet, I just thought of it while
having a coffee 20 mins ago.

If it's a W55 output should line up with 306 degrees.

    cheers
I think the Back lash in the gears will alter what degree reading you are going to get .

I tried my method earlier tonight, I ripped out the tailshaft pulled out the plugs
had it in 5th, turned engine over one turn by hand to take up slack, turn the cam wheel
around to line up with the mark on the output, turn engine over one turn again and the mark
on the shaft was pointing at about 308.

even if theres backlash theres not going to be enough to confuse the difference between
    a 55 and 58, about 25 degrees difference.

    cheers.

Edit, i treated the gearbox as if i was timing a dizzy, turn one way only otherwise you time
    on backlash as you mentioned.

Incase anyone is interested I got bored and calculated all the teeth.

    W55
    Layshaft - 47/32 - 1.469:1
    1st - 34/14 - 3.567:1
    2nd - 35/25 - 2.056:1
    3rd - 33/35 - 1.385:1
    4th - 1:1
    5th - 33/57 - 0.850:1
    Rev - 39/14 - 4.092:1

    W56
    Layshaft - 47/32 - 1.469:1
    1st - 35/13 - 3.954:1
    2nd - 35/24 - 2.142:1
    3rd - 33/35 - 1.385:1
    4th - 1:1
    5th - 33/57 - 0.850:1
    Rev - 39/14 - 4.092:1

    W57
    Layshaft - 46/34 - 1.353:1
    1st - 34/14 - 3.286:1
    2nd - 35/25 - 1.894:1
    3rd - 33/35 - 1.276:1
    4th - 1:1
    5th - 35/55 - 0.861:1
    Rev - 39/14 - 3.769:1

    W58
    Layshaft - 46/34 - 1.353:1
    1st - 34/14 - 3.286:1
    2nd - 35/25 - 1.894:1
    3rd - 33/35 - 1.276:1
    4th - 1:1
    5th - 33/57 - 0.783:1
    Rev - 39/14 - 3.769:1

    W59
    Layshaft - 47/32 - 1.469:1
    1st - 35/13 - 3.954:1
    2nd - 35/24 - 2.142:1
    3rd - 33/38 - 1.275:1
    4th - 1:1
    5th - 33/57 - 0.850:1
    Rev - 39/14 - 4.092:1

Its interesting to note that W55/W57/W58 share the same gears, with only 5th different for the W57, and the layshaft different for the W55...
Also interesting to note that the W56 and W59 are modified W55's.

Awesome, I'll add this info to my gearing calculator when I get around to fixing it. Do you have any info for other Toyota boxes?

    Hmmmm.!! very intresting..

i've been counting the turns of output shaft...
    eg..

turn input shaft 25 full turns.
    W55 1st = 7.01 on output shaft.. 5th = 29.4
    W57 1st = 7.61 on output shaft.. 5th = 29.03
    W58 1st = 7.61 on output shaft.. 5th = 31.93

i've used an old clutch plate on the input & an old yoke on the out, they both have a white paint mark on them, turn input 25 times & count the out put..

with this you do not need to open the box to count the teeth..

    cheers

Please note these next ones are not to be taken as gospel as I'm only assuming the layshaft ratio is the same as the W55.
Also two different reverse gear ratios were quoted depending on what site I went to. One was the same as the W55, the other was as below. I don't know whats right.
I have a W40 at home I can pull apart when I find the time.

    W40
    Layshaft - 47/32 - 1.469:1
    1st - 47/21 - 3.287:1
    2nd - 32/23 - 2.043:1
    3rd - 37/39 - 1.393:1 (could also be 38/40)
    4th - 1:1
    Rev - 33/12 - 4.039:1

W45 (identical to W55 with no 5th gear, different reverse?)
    Layshaft - 47/32 - 1.469:1
    1st - 34/14 - 3.567:1
    2nd - 35/25 - 2.056:1
    3rd - 33/35 - 1.385:1
    4th - 1:1
    Rev - 33/12 - 4.039:1

    W50 (same as W40 with a 5th gear)
    Layshaft - 47/32 - 1.469:1
    1st - 47/21 - 3.287:1
    2nd - 32/23 - 2.043:1
    3rd - 37/39 - 1.393:1 (could also be 38/40)
    4th - 1:1
    5th - 32/55 - 0.855:1 (could also be 25/43 or 18/31)
    Rev - 33/12 - 4.039:1

I'm having trouble reverse calculating the R154 as I don't know any teeth counts.
    Does anyone know any?

    Layshaft = 46/34 = 1.353

    W57 5th = 35/55 = 0.636
    5th x lay = 1.353 * 0.636 = 0.861

    W58 5th = 33/57 = 0.579
    5th x lay = 1.353 * 0.579 = 0.783

    Correct?

    Nope

    W55 = W58 with different layshaft
    W57 = W58 with different 5th gear

Isn't the steel sandwich plate of any significence?
I was under the impression that only w58's have a steel sandwich plate between the tail and main section.
