Cheers mate, thats what i was referring to![]()
No its a black toothed wheel inside it , you just use a razorblade around the top and then pry the cover off .

car to share the solution to the problem (if any). do you know what causes it?
hello
i know 7MGTE's use a karmann vortex AFM, im not sure about the 7MGE, but unless it uses a flap type (1G stylez) then this isnt applicable...Originally Posted by cambelt1

7MGE's use a flap..
cheers for the info
new knowledge FTW!

Adjust timing to 10deg and you have a cold 7MGE burnout machine! Mine was an absolute pig when cold, one day decided to check the timing, it was at 4deg (set by mechOriginally Posted by brett_celicacoupe
), adjusted to 10 and voila!
I have tried the AFM, I cannot find the said crew?

My MX83 had these exact same symptoms. No power when cold.
I fixed it by repacing the fuel pressure regulator with an adjustable one and I reduced the pressure. Too much fuel pressure when cold causes the car to run very rich. When rich, the flame speed is very slow and so it will only have power if you advance the timing. However as soon as it starts running off the O2 sensor it comes back to a normal mixture and then starts pinging.
Just curious.
Do you also have a hot start problem?? Hard to start when hot and been sitting for about 20 minutes.
Interesting with the FPR, does it actually run any more efficiently with it? I never have hot start problems at all, the only thing I need to do is run a relay to the starter motor as it is not getting enough juice sometimes.
I found that if I back my timing off, it is a pig when cold and seems to ping worse under little load..
My car has run much better since changing the FPR, no more giant plumes of white smoke at full throttle and no clouds of white misty smoke after those early morning cold starts.
More recently I replaced most of the exhaust system. car now runs really well. It's hard to say for sure if I have seen much improvement in fuel economy although drivability is now greatly improved and I have seem to be enjoying the extra zing by putting my foot down a little more often. The 7mge loves to rev now and its sounds great.
Whats involved in changing FPR? How do you know what to set it to?
Can anybody see anything bad with this? I know the 7M's run super rich in standard trim, my fear is we change the fuel pressure and I'll start detonating... BHG

Its the metal toothed wheel in there and its one of the philips head screws you undo. i think on your one you can hold the claw that locks the toothed wheel and turn it without loosening any screws, just mark the old position of it first.

It started off at zero and slowly moved up through 1.25V to 2.5V. Now Iv'e stopped fiddling with it and its settled down nicely.

BTW the FPR has a little vacuum line on it to increase the fuel pressure during high load.
Just curious.

This problem was fixed for me by changing the battery with a good one.
