you are better off with a 22RE motor out of a celica. They are cheap and have a lot of torque unlike the 18rg. the existing gearbox should bolt straight up as well being an R series motor.
If its just a work truck, i strongly suggest you do this.
Hi every1
im looking at a convertion for my poor old hilux, the 18R just wont take any more.
ive looked into the 18RG with a W50 box. i need a convertion that is hassel free and light on the pocket.
Your help will be very appreciated as i am not that good with technical side of things.
What I Have:
1982 Hilux 4X4
RN46 Model
18R Motor
L40 Box

with the 22re would i have to change the wireing loom?
or is it posible to change the EFI to a normal carbie.
22re is carby or maybe its 22r thats carby haha either way theres one thats carby and is out of the hilux also
Only the shittiest of wines come in 5 litres

yeah the carby version is just called a 22R from memory.
If you wanted, correct me if im wrong, as i am not 100% sure but you might be able to put the carby gear off a 22r or even an 18r onto a 22re if you found a corona or celica with one...
other choise is the 2.2L 21rc motor out of the RA60 celica..
I havent looked into the 21RC it would be just as easy to fit that as the 22R or is there more involved???
I need something that will get up hills that is good for road use and also those beaten tracks and out of bog holes.

I think your right, i would have to change the box to a w50 or similar
so which would be the easyest transfer to do

An 18RG is a twin overhead cam 2 litre, good for a fair few revs, can be a few$ to get a decent one.
A 22R is a single cam 2.4 litre, more torque down low than an 18RG but doesnt rev real hard, generaly a whole lot easier and cheaper to get hold of.
As you are looking for torque for off road and bog holes displacement is you friend more than the ability to rev. (generaly)
The R designates they are from the same family so Bellhousing will bolt straight up, engine mounts and sumps are designed to fit in same chassis so generaly the same configuration.

which would you recomend the 22R or the 18RG coz if i looked under my bonnet a seen a twin over head cam motor in my hilux i would nearly cream my pants![]()
If you want revs go with the 18RG and drive it like you stole it, if you want lugging ability go with the 22R.
Personaly in a 4wd I would go with the 22R.

im currently in the same situation as you, the sump is different the oil pump on the 18RG is in the middle of the sump unlike the hilux sump it is at the back to clear the front diff. The bolt patterns are the same but im not too sure if its possible to take the rn46 4x4 oil pump and place it in the 18rg so the 4x4 sump can be bolted up. i havent seen how the 4x418r oil pump looks like yet.Originally Posted by Spanner

Oil pump will be the same, just swap your oil pickup and sump over.
