Buy your parts elsewhere - seals aren't a problem if you ask someone who actually knows what day of the week it is, only dealers with no idea give you the 'VIN please' excuse for stuff that simple.
I am currently building an engine without the knowledge of what the engine came from. Its a 2jzge rear sump eng # 0280747
For parts like seals there are different part numbers depending on the year model etc.
I believe I have seen engine number lists mated up to models and production years but cant remember where. Can you?
It will be boosted if that effects it.Looking at rear main seal, front crank seal, cam seals.
please post info relating to similiar info engine number lists for any toyota if you have it,cheers.Pete.

OK,it was one of the more helpful toymodders supplying different part #.s for different year models for the same part that led me to believe that I may need to know the source of the engine.Cheers.Pete.
Pete, why not remove the old ones and goto the bearing / seal shop!
Should be quite a bit cheaper for the same product!
Cheers

Yeah thanks guys, surely if I present myself armed with both the various genuine toyota numbers and the item itself I would expect success genuine or otherwise.
Its sometimes more convenient to be able to simply order by number, pay by card and recieve by post.........this requires the grey areas be removed. No Worries.
Check the spark leads if they are still on the engine. Might reveal the year of engine, if they haven't been replaced etc.
"Welcome the dude who ain't the buyer of mugs"
hmmmm sold the head,will backtrack
ive found if i say, i bought the engine off an importer engine only, i dont need to provide a VIN...
Did this with both 7mge parts (didnt have car on me so no vin number) and brake parts for ma70 as well....
edit: most bearing shops will be able to source it for you if you tell them the donor car anyway...say you own a lexus with a 2jzge (gs300??) therefore being an aussie car they *should* have a listing as oppose to import vehicles, where they might not have a listing...
blake
FWIW the Aus delivered GS300 was a JZS160 fitted with the VVTi 2JZ-GE - the cam seals are most likely different (or atleast one of them).
I've always bought aftermarket seals using internal diameter, external diameter, thickness and direction of rotation. In my experience there hasn't been enough variation for these 4 parameters to be insufficient, although there may be seals that need more parameters.
If a dealer parts interpreter gives you the VIN runaround, you can always ask to speak to the supervisor or spare parts dept manager. It seems the higher ranked employees are able to access the EPC without requiring VINs etc, and are responsible for their deparment should a complaint arise. Of course if the one at the top doesn't want to help, you don't have much of a choice.

thanks goys, would still like to get some info on the sites that llist engine numbers to car models?
Taking the old seal would allow measurements to be checked for the mos style of getting the right item.
FWIW, a rear sumped NA 2JZ would come from a JZA80 Supra.
While you won't be able to work out what year the motor is from for Supras, by engine number, you can work it out by frame number, for other people's further reference, here:

If you can read off the part number from a part from your engine the toyota electronic parts catalog (EPC) will tell you which models it was used on. If you can get a few part numbers you should be able to eliminate the application to models down to just one. If you have the part number from the ECU that would be a good start.
I'm happy to look it up for you if you don't have access to a EPC.
thanks amichie, didnt get the loom or ecu,,,,,,,,,,its no big deal,im OK.just would be useful to find a shortcut for those in my situation.Information is becoming so easy, just a matter of knowing where to find it.cheers bro.
