what the hell would you do that for? what a waste of energy!
why not just do it when the stuffed turbo is off into a bucket without spark! lmao

its 1000 times easier to pull the oil drain off, and if i get oil coming out of that obviously oil feed isn't the problem. If there is no oil I will take the turbo off and see if oil is coming out of the pressure feed - its possibly the oil galleries inside the turbo are blocked.
I just went out and had another look - you can turn the turbo by hand, but its very difficult and there is definately a mechanical interference in it. I can feel something grinding inside it... Even if the oil feed was blocked, would 15min of idleing cause a turbo to sieze - I wouldn't think so...

edit: you need ot find out if the turbo is getting oil from engine start-up, the inline restrictor will result in oil drain occuring way after it gets into the turbo. The drain might be easier, but a turbo without incoming oil is a door-stop.

    ...

you change to a cheaper brand of crack, kingmick?

-when you crank it with no spark there's still injectors running - why spread petol everywhere?
-what energy lost? the whole point of removing the plugs is to use less energy to crank the engine.
-the description that this guys is giving suggests that the new turbo is still attached to the engine, there's no need undo all the hardware (piping, dump, oil lines, coolant lines) for this simple test.
-this test will not move enough air to make the turbine rotate - thus it's not going to damage the dead turbo any further.

i'm trying to help the guy, you just can't help being an arsehole.

If you have the turbo off is it oily where the lines bolt up, i'm guessing it was fairly dry when you put it together by the sounds of it.

If it is still dry you have no oil feed.

I wouldnt be pulling it apart until you at least rang the guys you bought it off, some chance of getting a swap if in one bit, next to nil chance if it has been pulled apart.

and I don't think there will be much chance of the wrecker replacing it for me - their aftersale service is not what i'd call spectacular.. At least there are a million stock silvia turbos for sale at any time

If it is still on the engine I am with Chuckster other than would probably pull the return line off.

Do you actual do any work on cars mate? as the circuit is primped with oil you will know in a heart beat if there is pressure and the amount of fuel will be bugger all and as it will be a dead cold engine its pretty safe.! lmao

why would you pull the return off? and if the turbo is on the fuel is not going to go far!
Just making more work for the sake of it and the turbo is stuffed any way so giving it idle pressure isnt going to hurt it!

Would pull the return of because i dont know the history of the turbo, how long has it been sitting around with the oil galleries open.

All the flow in the world isn't going to achieve much if internaly blocked, if oil runs out of the return the bearings are getting decent oil supply.

Why go to all the rest of the work, probably along the same lines as you were so up tight about a certain mag wheel polishing thread, err on the side of caution when advising other people to do stuff with their cars that may involve damage or personal injury.

    regards
    jon

    edit: my spelling is crap.

Thats right but if its tight and its on, you only need to check the feed as it will have to be fixed anyway, etc.

i agree jonra - I will start by pulling the return line off because I can do that without removing the turbo (and engine), if oil comes out the return then I can be sure that its not an oil supply problem and it must just be unlucky to get 2 dodgy turbos. If no oil comes out the return then I will have to pull the turbo off to investigate further..

keeping in mind that when I put the 2nd turbo on I checked the lines to make sure they aren't blocked - i'm guessing its the turbo itself that has failed.

can i ask why the return line is so easy to get to?

the oil feed inlet should be facing upwards and is usually (on thse kinds of cores) a banjo fitting requiring a 14 or 17mm socket to undo it... it should be a 2 second job to undo it.

Has someone rotated the turbo without clocking the core so the drain is facing downwards? These things rely on gravity for oil to exit the housing...
