Default HKS Type 1 TTimer in ST185

    G'Day Lads,

I had the above timer installed along with a new alarm system and it works fine, except for when the timer function itself is used.

I stop the car and turn the ignition off, and when the timer takes over my charge light comes on. I didnt install it personally, and when I spoke to the installer he said that there are two igntion wires coming off the barrel. One is from the alternator, the other is used only for the charge light.

Im concerned that when the timer is keeping the motor going its running off the battery instead of the alternator. Is this at all possible? I was thinking if the timer was drawing ignition current from ACC or something this could happen.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Is this common to incorrect wiring? I am getting the installer to come out and have a look at it, but I wanted to get a good idea of possible causes so I dont get bullshitted to.

    thanks for you help

Th echarge light is in series with the field wire on altenator, if the field winding is drwaing power rather than making its own current flows to the altenator via the light and light glows.

Sounds like the installer has picked up thew power source from this wire on the ignition switch side of charge light, the timer is then drawing power backwards through the circuit and lighting up the globe.

Wiring diagram should be pretty plain where it needs to run from.

Would have thought that it had to pick power from somewhere that has power all the time regardless of switch position.

    regards
    jon

So it works unless you try to use it?

PS Jonra's explanation seems on the mark, lance has the wiring diagram on his server if you need it!

Easy tiger ....it may have sounded silly on the surface, but there are more functions to a timer then the timer function i.e

    Backlight
    RPM monitor
    Shift light function
    Km/h monitor
    0/100km/h time etc.
    0/400m time

All these worked fine which means that the majority of the wiring must be correct.

Ive got my own wiring diagrams at home and will be consulting them when I get there, but wanted to see if this was a common problem i.e. a problem that crops up due to a common mistake when wiring up the loom.

Relax, just a friendly dig , the real purpose of my post was to point you at the diagrams if you didn't have any (like me).

Is cool I figured as much, but it did sound a bit strange on the surface so I felt the need to clarify anyhow

when the timer is counting down, if I replace the key and turn it to on, then the charge light goes back out...

He must have chopped the wire in the wrong spot... I chopped mine fairly close to the keybarrel (i.e. before it branches off) and don't have this problem.

Light will go out when you turn the key on because the timer can now get power from the key switched circuit rather than backwards from the altenator field circuit through the globe.

If you want to check if the alternator is still charging pop the hood and check the voltage at the battery when the turbo timer is running... <13V = not charging >13V = charging.

thanks for the input guys....ill check the battery voltage in timer mode and let the guy know when he comes around...

incidentally, the alarm it was installed with was a brant....I would say im very happy with the alarm system overall, except that sometimes the auto window winders dont wind the windows up all the way when its activated. Another thing to let the guy know hehe
