what sort of filter?
could have been because of fuel being sprayed back onto the filter etc.. (reversion)
funny.. recently many people were saying they couldn't catch fire![]()
Hey guys, my 2tg caught on fire this morning. Luckily with enough blowing and burning of my lip I blew it out. One of the carbs filters caught on fire. Could this be due a dirty filter? If so does that mean if I replace the filter then all will be fine? If not does anyone have any other suggestions as to what caused the fire and what would need doing to fix it?
Thanks
Dave

yeh i've had this happen before, surely it's like with a carb when it catches fire in the actual throat itself, you could just give her a big rev, suck all the oxygen away from it and it'd go out.
ummm...tryin to think which way timing has to be out to 'carby fart' alot
check your timing champ, pretty sure it's too much advance will do this.
not sure if thats why they caught fire tho.

ahh, i forgot about backfire

The problem with reving to remove oxygen was that I was trying to start the car. I'm thinking it could be that it needs a tune as well. When I was trynig to start the car it was as though the engine was flooded with petrol. As I was trying to unflood I saw the smoke coming from the bonet vent. After removing the filter cover tonight there was a puddle of petrol in the throat of the carb. To me this means its running too rich. Hopefully I'll fix the problem tomorrow.
Yeh probably just frontfired and toasted your filter![]()
Hold your foot flat and keep cranking can often put a carb fire out as it sucks fuel into motor.
Probably not too rich a mixture to get flooded before starting, did you pump throttle a fair few times to get to start?
Has the motor been running or is it a fresh setup?
Yea getting new filters tomorrow. Will see what happens.
Yea pumped the throttle quite a few times and the motor has been running. Was running fine the night before.
Perhaps you could get a fire extinguisher. Next time you mightn't be able to blow it out!
Dave,
More questions for you.
Have you removed and replaced the plug leads overnight between when it was running fine and the fire? Swap just two leads and one could be firing on the intake stroke.
Are the carbies Solexes?
If so and they are stock then jetting and the starting method are not the problems.
Can you:
1) Check all four inner venturies. With the filters off reach into each barrel a try to move the inner venturi. They should be tight and not move.
2) Remove the two jet covers and check all four main jet blocks. They should be screwed in and tight.
3) Check all four pump jets. Remove the four slotted covers and pull out the jets. They are located down near each idle mixture screw. There is a "D" shape with a number stamped on the flat. This flat and the tiny hole should face the intake port.
Check "River's" 2T thread for pictures of the Solexes if unsure.
These three possible problems are most likely to cause poor starting and running, compounding itself into a fire.
1) If one or more venturies are really loose or missing this can cause backfire.
2) If one or more jet blocks have wound up and loose this can cause flooding and then backfire whilst running.
3) If a pump jet is in backwards or sideways then fuel is being shot away from the inlet port and any misfire ignites the pooled fuel which was not picked up in the air flow.

Ah, yet another pair of these "inflammable" filter socks goes up in flames. Good to hear that yours wasnt overly bad.

Also, the needle that regulates bowl level can become jammed and allow excess fuel and when this happens it can overflow onto something hot and ignite - whether the carbies are hot enough it another thing.

Quite possible this has decided to get a bit of crap lodged in it and caused it to stick and caused it to flood.
Cheers Brett.
Cheers guys for the responses. I had to order the filters in, so I won't get them till bout Wednesday.
