i'd go with what brett says...if its convenient..
most engine rebuilders and some engineering workshops have an acid bath. the same one they use to clean cylinder heads etc.
take it to them, offer some cash....then go back a couple days later.
the paint will have fallen off and there will be a spotless surface ready for a quick solvent clean, then a paint.
no health hazards to you either

would I be correct in assuming that VHT caliper paint is as good as the rest of their products?
Anyone have some pics of the colour of their "gold" colour?
I have found it to be great, mine still looks like the day it was painted after 2 years on the front calipers.Originally Posted by Draven
I haven't had any experience with anything other than their black caliper paint though - I have never had the inclination to draw attention to my single piston calipers![]()

Pull the calipers apart, use paint stripper but don't let it sit on there longer than needed. Use gloves and a mask and rub them clean with some steel wool. Clean them off and rub over with surface prep stuff (i.e. Prepsol).
Procure can of VHT brake caliper paint and paint. Mine look just like the day I did them over a year ago. Follow the directions to the T and you will come up with the same result.
Purchase a rebuild kit and give the calipers some new seals. Put brake calipers on and enjoy the fact they look good and are mechanically perfect.

I think this step is being omitted? Hence the worry about strippers and cleanser destroying seals etc. Is that the case Draven?Originally Posted by JustCallMeFrank

no, I'm rebuilding them with new seals, and since the pads have been painted new pads too (pity, they were like 90%)

paintstripper is probably bad for the rubber seals,
i say soak them in brakefluid overnight and the next day wash them off, and the seals wont be harmed at all
