Gianttomato where does this scale that developes in the pot come from.I'm assuming it
is some form of sludge that settles out of the fuel and solidifies.But then given that a swirl pot swirls the fuel I can't see how this could happen.

So GT you have your 12 micron filter before your lift pump where as that diagram has it after?
Guys the key to all this is actually pretty simple.
You just need to remember what each commponent was really designed for. Lift pumps are traditionally high flow carby pumps. Therefors the best protection for them is a filter intended for a carby fed engine. (see Z14 in the photo further up) These are generally paper element type filters.
Your main pump is NOT designed to "lift" fuel, ie its pulling power is poor and therefore any restriction in the line that feeds it is bad. As such an EFI filter is not a good idea. Further to this is the high volume nature of the pump making the concept of using a paper element filter (ie a carby filter) a little silly (go outside, wet some newspaper, turn the hose on full bore while holding a sheet of paper open. see how it rips appart. This would be bad in your fuel system)
finally the injectors. These fuckers open for milliseconds and opperate under high pressure through a bloody small hole. its takes next to nothing to block said small hole. a good quality EFI filter is the only choise here.
GT has said it but I will echo his comments, a fuel filter is much cheaper to replace than a fuel pump or getting and injector service. At the end of the day its up to you just how "correct" or fail safe you want your fuel system to be.

As for not needing a filter before the main pump.. if you lift pump fails or the PAPER element filter tears... Where does all the shit go ??????

As for not running a filter before your injectors - see above and remember a injector service is a major PITA. And you can't/shouldn't run an EFI filter anywhere else. Once again.. See above![]()

I guess what im querying is where to get the pre-high pressure pump filter, since no-one seems to stock them around here, except for the Earls ones which retail for more than the freaking pump.
Rod: can you post the part number for that filter.

Mate the prefilters are ordered into work as just that. "PREFILT" they come in a plain white box, no part numbers at all. We usually have up to a dosen in stock and they retail for $22ea. Worse case I could always mail you a couple![]()
